need help with getting my kitties to use this thing

Postby missnurse1967 » Sun Sep 23, 2007 8:04 pm

[size=150]Hello, I just recently purchased the litter robot after much research on this forum. I was so excited when I received it, setup was simple as pie but the issue is my kitties one is a 4 month old tabby and the other one is a 3 month old ragdoll. I have got this litter robot set up in my bedroom where the other litter box is ( right next to it) and I have put some of their old poopies in the litter robot, have cat attract in the litter as well............. they were curious and did climb in and check it out but still have not used the thing.............. very frustrated...... I have had the litter robot set up (unplugged) for 3 days now.
I would appreciate any helpful suggestions on how to get my kittens to use this.......... it truly is a wonderful invention and I am praying that I havent wasted my money :(

Here's what I would do --

Where do you keep your litter box? Do you have your old litter box still set-up? I suggest that you put some of the litter from the old box into the LR. If you are totally brave and the litter box is in a confined space such as a bathroom or laundry room, feed the kitties and then put them in the room with the LR and NO other litter box. Leave them in there for a bit (half hour to 45 minutes) -- and see what happens.

Hello and thank you for the response back. I have the litter robot set up in my bedroom right next to the old litter box.
I have removed it completely today and just left the litter robot there with some of their litter from the old litter box inside. I hope this works. I also have some cat attract in there as well. They arent afraid of it & they will go in but they do not do any business in there.

I have two kitties and the little boy is very skeptical of anything new. I have tried various
different litter boxes, the last being the Cat Genie that I had to give up because of
scardy cat. The one thing you don't want to do is rush them into using it. I know
from experience that it takes at least two weeks to acclimate to a new litter box.
Do what you were doing, keep the old box next to the LR but let it get real dirty
and keep the LR clean. When they are NOT near the LR next week turn it on so they
get use to the sound of it. Later they can watch it when you are near it and they
do not find it unusal. Spend time around it with them playing. The good news is
that they have been going into it. They will use it when the other box gets
yucky. Being patient will produce the reward of regular use.I received the LR 10 days
ago and so far I am very happy with it. Scardy cat uses the LR all the time and his
" brave "sister still uses the old(now very dirty) and LR. I thought it would have been
the other way around. Oh well, what ever works to get them to use it.
Good luck and keep us posted.

THANKS to all that replied to my earlier posting........ I can now say that my kitties are using it all the time now YEAH :)
The next thing I am seeking help on is the ODOR of the litter robot. It smells....... it has clean litter and i am emptying the drawer every day. ANY suggestions would be helpful.
I have sprinkled litter box deodrizer in the tray and bought a pet odor absorber to place in the drawer as well and it still stinks to high heaven........ I do love the whole concept though of not having to scoop the litter box that in itself is a blessing......... now just to figure out the odor problem.........
thanks a bunch

I have tried a few products that others have posted. Cat Ammo by itself didn't work too well,
Odor-Z-Way did fairly well, Ultra Pearls cat litter worked very well with or without other products.
I just pour about 2 cups of product in the drawer and voila no odors. I have two cats and this
way I don't need to empty the drawer so frequently. Some have suggested using an air
purifier but I wanted the eliminate the odor at the source so that the cats don't find the smells
offensive to them.

:D Well done! Glad you have had some success.

You might find that you will need to clean the LR more often if you keep it in your bedroom. I don't keep the litter box in my bedroom -- that would be too difficult for me to do. Kitties sleep in their own beds in the laundry room with the LR.

The odor stuff.... I have done a few things. I moved the LR so it is angled toward a window that is open just a crack. In this way, the LR globe has some air flow. I use Nature's Miracle (NM) litter. It does smell piney...I have a small tub the goes in the LR drawer to catch the waste products and I empty this twice a day (after the poop). I rinse the tub, wipe it out with rubbing alcohol and put baking soda in it for some odor control. Once a week I use a wisk broom to sweep down the inside of the LR globe. Then I wipe it out and am now using either hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol on the last wipe out as a bacteria control. And the litter is changed totally at least every two months.

What I have found is that the weekly wipe outs and using the hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol seem to kill the odor in the globe after cleaning-- not just mask it (I prefer the rubbing alcohol). But this likely doesn't last long. In the process of cycling, the inside of the globe can get smeared with the waste and this is likely part of the odor issue. It's hardly detectable in a laundry room but a bedroom -- that would be another story. Eventually, the used litter will likely develop an odor of poo... Also odor can be coming from the area where the litter goes during the LR cycle. A clump of litter wrapped poo can get lodged in that area.

There's some litters that people swear totally control the odor in the LR but these aren't flushable and that's what I want -- to flush the clumps. The litters developed by Arm & Hammer (the multiple cat formula) may be one of these.

Putting some fresh litter in the globe -- particularly true with Nature's Miracle -- can also freshen/mask the air in it.

Again, let us know how it goes.
