Yes, the LR2 is not only quieter than the old LR1, but the motor has a less unpleasant sound. The old LR motor sounded like a cordless drill driving a screw into a sheet of plywood for two minutes. The LR2 motor has a higher-pitched sound, much like a hair dryer and it doesn't boom around the house as much. The motor also sits in a compartment in the base instead of hanging off the side so that helps to contain some of the noise it makes. It also protects the motor if you need to clean the base.
It's hardly silent but it's a major improvement over the old LR motor.
