6 cats - thinking of an LR??

Postby Sue » Wed Sep 24, 2003 2:45 pm

We have 6 cats and are thinking of getting a LR. Has anyone had any experience with this number of cats using the LR?

Thanks in advance,
Sue

You'll need more than one probably...

We have three and have to change it every three days at the most. I think that six might be pushing it a little. You might need two boxes. You could get one litter robot and one omega litter box. The omega works like a manual version of the l.r., but isn't hundreds of dollars.

If you can afford and have space for more than one LR, go for it. If not, the LR + Omega might be a solution. The large Omega would probably be better for that # of cats. We haven't been able to find the large at the pet stores - it may only be available online.

6 cats and 1 Robot

Postby Lauren » Thu Oct 09, 2003 10:33 am

Hi Sue,

For six cats I wouldn't recommend one Litter Robot without another box. The unit doesn't cycle until the cat's been out of it for 7 minutes, and if another cat enters before the cycle begins, the 7 minute timer starts over. You'd be likely to have a situation where the Robot isn't getting a chance to cycle between every use. Two units would be ideal, but if you wanted to give one unit a try, I'd have another box available as well.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions about your specific situation.

I have 5!

We have 5 cats and got my first Litter Robot in July. Since we have always had 2 litter maid machines, I replaced one of them with the Robot. A couple of the cats took to it immediately, but 2 of them continued to exclusively use the litter maid. One of them wouldn't even consider using the Robot (he is the oldest of the 5, almost 16 years old).

Well, because the cats were more comfortable with the Litter Maid, they tended to use that unit more than the Robot, so the single litter maid became a huge nightmare of a problem! (Those who have had one know what I am talking about when too many cats use that unit). It got so bad, I could not stand the multi-daily cleaning of the litter maid unit, and was ready to chuck it out of the window!

It came down to one fact: either we get rid of the robot and put the other litter maid unit back, or get rid of the other litter maid unit and get another litter robot. After seeing how maintenace free the robot was, and how much hassle the litter maid has always been, my choice was clear. However, I needed to convince the wife to allow me to order yet another automated litter box, which she consideres a waste of money (but expects me to do the scooping). She finally said yes, if I could demonstrate that Nord (the 16 year old) would use it.

I have tried all of the tricks here, and what I found is that the reason that he did not want to use it is that the opening is too high from the ground. I built a wide ramp to the entry way, and he finally consented to use it! So, I just received my second Litter Robot, got rid of the other litter maid unit, and now I am perfectly happy (and so are my cats) with the setup.

One thing that I HIGHLY recommend is to not get too comfortable with the ease of maintenance of the unit. You need to check the waste drawer frequently to see if it is getting full (or just piling up in one place). If the waste gets too high in the drawer, it does cause a BIG mess!!

Other than that issue, the litter robot is fantastic!!

We use to have 6 cats, daughter took two of them so now we only have 4. I fear I am a bad cat person (am more a dog person) as I have NEVER had more then ONE litter box, of any kind, for all the cats! Add to the fact I cleaned , scooped , it only once a day to once every 3 days....
We only had one litter made, got two in 3 years time as they kept breaking. I fear I changed out the litter but never cleaned, the rake, etc. on them. For 6 cats you had to change the expensive wast box's at least every day and a half. I got the LR yeasterday. We have 4 cats, one 11, 3 are 10. Yeasterday one of them stood on the step just looking in. I had gotten rid of the other litter so they had no other thing to use. I pushed, them each in (one at a time) and they jumped right back out, but once they knew they could get out, they all are not using it. With 6 cats you may have to empty the tray once a day, but to me that is still better then scooping every hour! (or even once a day), and you can get bags cheap, you can get 100 for .50 some places and even big expensive kit. bags are only 50 for $5.00. so cheap ones are easy.
True, two would be better then one but I don't know many that can afford two, at least at the same time. My cat's don't mind if someone was in before them, it is when I don't scoop for 3 days they get upset, tho they still use any litter. So for mine, just having one use it before them is clean. The only place I can put any litter box is in the living room so this is a god send for me. Unlike the others, I think you should be ok with just one for now, if you understand you may have to empty the tray every day or other day. but it cost just pennys for the bags so that should be fine. But all cat's are differnt. Are yours use to haveing more then one litter box? If they are they may be upset. Tho I have had no problems with mine starting to use the new litter box, some on here post they have had problems with theirs. To me, you have to know your cats.
Don't know if this helps any or not and it is jmo.
