Cheap non-dusty litter for use with LR?

Postby cwillisf » Sun Jan 14, 2007 4:50 am

We've had our Litter Robot for a few years now, and while it's not perfect, it still beats the pants off of scooping a pan. However, one of our household is very dust-sensitive, and in our new place the dust bellowing out of the LR when I refill it with new litter goes straight into the kitchen and living room.

Can anyone suggest to me a new type of litter? Our priorities are, in order:
1) Works with the Litter Robot
2) No dust
3) Cheap

For reference, our current "too dusty" litter is Scoop Away multi-cat formula. I know, it's not exactly the dustiest litter out there, but it's still too dusty for our needs.

Thanks!

I agree that Scoop Away is very dusty. I tried it after a few LR owners suggested it, but was surprised to see how much dust it produced. It even made my cats cough.

I use Tidy Cats Scoop for Multiple Cats, Immediate Odor Control Formula , with "New" Tidy Lock technology. I can dump 9 pounds of this into the LR and barely see any dust. It clumps great, is cheap, and most grocery stores carry it.

I will look for that one. I've yet to find one that all three kitties like. Is is scented? Lily will NOT poop in a scented litter, LOL at least I think that's the common factor in her pooping right in front of/to the side of the litter robot. I don't think i've tried this one, so I will give it a shot :)

We use Arm and Hammer "Multicat Formula" litter. Very low dust content (only when pouring it in) and very good clumping. It also has a nice aroma when stirred up which fades quickly and controls odor from our two cats very well.

We purchase it at Target and the price is very good.

Cheerz!

Pet Food Express has their own brand that's pretty good and unscented... called Smart Cat or something. Then there is "Better Way" litter, also very good.

All the Tidy Cats formulas are scented even if they do not say they are, they smell like public bathroom air freshener :P.

Dr. Elsey's Ultra clumping is good and very dust free but not totally cheap. You get what you pay for there...

Fresh Results is Walmart's answer to Nature's Miracle for a lot less money. It claims to be 99.9% dust free.

Arm & Hammer has put out the same product as Nature's Miracle and Fresh Results with a little different scent. It's called Essentials. All products are made from corn fibers (cobs??). Prices range from $6 to $11 for a ten pound bag with Fresh Results being the cheapest, followed by Essentials, and the original and top of the (price) line, Nature's Miracle.

But both products are heavily pine scented...

the only real scent-free products I have found are:

Dr Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra - my favorite, very low dust
Premium Choice unscented with Baking Soda
Pestell Easy Clean Unscented, low dust
Pestell Easy Clean with Baking Soda
Better Way unscented (original) - my cats LOVE this one it is like fine sand, but it tracks like crazy, low dust though
Scoop Away "Free" unscented has a very slight smell, but claims to be free of dye and perfume. The Free version is lower dust than the multiple cats. My cats like it and they are very picky about smells, too

I agree. Essentials has an odor that might be more tolerable. I wish there was less scent. I tolerate it because I like the litter.

I have tried a number of different litter brands but seem to come back to Fresh Results. It is made by the same company that makes
Nature's Miracle but it is cheaper. I agree that the pine scent is a little strong but I open the bag and air the litter out before putting
it in the LR. What is not used is stored in a large container with a lid and in a while the pine scent is really light. I haven't seen the
Essentials yet but would like to try it to see if it is as good as the Fresh Results. Glad to see that there are more non clay litters
being made.

I'm not sure it's non dusty but my favorite is the Wegman's brand clumping litter. And I also use the Wal-Mart brand "Special Kitty" clumping litter. I alternate between these brands. Although I like the Wegman's brand the best (but I don't like shopping at Wegman's so I rarely get it anymore). I find the Wegman's brand clumps the hardest. Which is what I like the best about it.

Ditto on the Walmart "Special Kitty" clumping litter in the bag. Never had a problem with pooling or "hidden chunks" or odor. This is the only one I use. It works so well I say, ''Why switch?"
