Duct tape barrier to force "turn around"

Postby JD » Thu Nov 16, 2006 12:10 am

Hi folks,
To those of you who have had success motivating cats to turn around in the LR by putting some duct tape across the opening: May I ask for a bit of clarification.

I too have a lightweight acrobat who is leaping in (bypassing the step) and failing to turn around in the box.....

When you tape across the entrance, are you taping across the inside or the outside of the opening? If across the outside, are you covering the "lip" with your tape, or are you leaving it sticking out?
Thanks for tips!

It's best to tape the outside since that has a smooth surface. You can then put another strip of duct tape over the exposed sticky part so your cat won't get stuck trying to get out. You can also just put paper or something else on the sticky part to cover it.

If by chance you have gaffer's tape, that works better since it won't leave a residue on the globe like duct tape will.

Another alternative is the "duct tape rope". Start by sticking the first couple inches of the duct tape on the roll on one side of the entrance, then start twisting the tape by turning the roll. This will make a no-so-sticky rope of duct tape across the entrance. Once you've twisted enough tape to make enough rope to block the entrance, pull a couple more inches off the roll, tear the tape off and stick that end of the tape to the other side of the entrance.

Well, the Litter Robot 2 doesn't have a smooth surface; there's a rubber lip that sticks out for around an inch and a quarter. That does tend to focus the splash on the step but it makes creating a barrier a little more difficult.

I'm going to try the "rope" method, myself.

The outside is smoother than the inside.

Across the bottom 3rd or so of the front opening.
Or try this:
This was not my original idea, but I must say it is a great one... hanging a rope w/ a weight (I just used a keyring-- don't want a heavy weight knocking my cat's brains out) down 1/2 to 2/3 of the way down the entryway to the globe. Not only does my cat now enter gently (since there is a rope swinging in her face), but she TURNS AROUND once inside. I am so gratetful for this site!!!
