Kittens have no fear - Can they get hurt in the LR??

Postby Ash » Thu Aug 14, 2003 1:28 pm

Well I got my LR yesterday... I have 2 kittens that are 5 1/2 months old, and they just absolutely love that thing... they think it's a new toy for them to play in! My biggest problem isn't getting them in it, it's getting them out of it.... LOL

They didn't need any adjustment period AT ALL. I got rid of their old litter box as soon as I set up the LR, and they've been using it for the past 2 days without any hesitation.

The only problem I have so far, is they both like to watch it spin, and they keep climbing inside of it while its running its cycle. It's supposed to shut off if they step inside during the cycle, but my one kitten weighs about 5.2lbs, and it doesn't always trip the sensor when she gets back in, so she spins around inside while it's turning, which could get kinda messy I would imagine... LOL I've adjusted the sensitivty of the sensor, but it still doesn't always stop when she steps back in, or sometimes it stops, but then starts up again while she's still inside. It turns slow, so hopefully she can't get hurt in there???? Also she tries to climb through the waste portal holes while its spinning... gotta love kittens!

sensor sensitivity

Ash-

You might want to contact Lauren, the LR rep on this forum. She can direct you on how to change the sensitivity of the weight sensor for your small guys. Or, you might want to leave it be until they grow a little, and unplug it while away for safety.

The box weight sensor is designed to register cats over I think 5 lbs., but maybe your guys are still too light to trigger it.

Kitty Ferris Wheel

Hi Ash,

First let me address the easy part of your post, which is the kittens using the waste ports to climb in and out of. I think you need to order the Kick'n Kitty Guards. They fit over the waste ports when the globe is in the home position, and not only keep the cats from using the waste ports as a door, but also keep them from kicking litter onto the floor. They cost $35 in black and $39 in bone. You can order them online or call me at 1-877-250-7729.

Next, let's talk about the cats jumping in while the globe is turning. Your kitties should not be allowed to spin around in the globe, no matter how fun it is for them. There's another post on this forum called Adjusting the Sensitivity. (If you can't find it, email me and I'll email you the instructions directly.) I'd suggest you make your Robot extra sensitive until they put some weight on. At that point, you should readjust it. If you can't make it sensitive enough to trip for the kittens without making it so sensitive that the red light flashes (meaning the unit thinks a cat is always inside), the best thing to do would be to keep it unplugged and cycle it manually until the kittens are a little bigger. Again, I'd stress that it isn't safe to let the kittens tumble in the globe.

Please contact me if you have any questions about this.

Hi Lauren,

I already have the Kick'n Kitty guards that came installed on it. What they do... is jump on top of the globe as it's spinning, and try to climb thru the holes as they're spinning on top of the globe.

That's kittens for ya... curious about everything! I think the novelty has worn off a bit now, they're not as obsessed with it as they were when I first got it. But just to be safe, I leave it unplugged when I'm not home so they can't get hurt.

Thanks you both for your help!

Playful kittens

Okay, Ash, I'm glad to hear that. Cats will be cats. And by the way, the novelty does wear off. When I first got my Robot, my Ocicat jumped in all the time when it started to cycle. It took about two weeks for him to stop. :)
