Review: Litter Robot is a real stinker

That's true, but as you said, the majority should be diverted back into the globe. The ports are above center and the internal guard completely covers the port, so there should be very little leakage here. It is however possible that some urine could get through, and if it is happening there should be a witness of it on the outside surface of the globe around the ports.

Mine was fabulous until it stopped working. I sent it away to get fixed under warranty, it comes back, and low and behold, has the same problem. Now I can't get through on the phone, as their line always goes to voicemail now, and no one responds to my emails. What's the deal? I've been scooping litter daily for more than a month now, and it's killing me :(

Comparison vs "expectations"

Actually, as i noted before, I have been an owner of Littermaid, Litterobot, Purrforma and ScoopFree. So, when i said my the Litter Robot was the smelliest, that is a comparison based on actual personal results not expectations, as you put it. On one end (the winning one), Scoop Free has virtually no smells that I can detect (for 30 days at a time with my one cat), and I am on my third month of this one (also completely trouble free in every respect). On the other end (the losing one), Litter Robot smelled intensely (not to mention disfunctional in many other ways) where even washing in a bathtub would not get rid of the smells, as if, seemingly, maximing the odor over a non-electronic one.

I think what I am trying to say is that I took the Pepsi Challenge: I tried and purchased all the electronic ones and, in my mind, Litter Robot was by far my least favorite and most disfunctional, and that includes odor control. I would prefer the disfunctional Littermaid over the Litter Robot, and so would Todd, the cat, who has ultimate power in this decision. And with Scoop Free, both of us are finally happy.
Have purchased and used ScoopFree, Littermaid, Litter Robot, Purrfecta

I've had the same response, or lack there of, from technical support. I sent them an email last week and no response. I'm having to switch to something that I can get to work. I agree, scooping sucks!!

If you're not getting response from technical support. Please email me directly at mailto:bbaxter@litter-robot.com. Let me know when you sent your first request. I'll track this down and find out where the problem is.

I agree with rayon. I tried both the Litter Robot and the ScoopFree, and the Litter Robot was much smellier due to its design. Our cats peed only inside the liner where they were supposed to, yet the smell was bad after only 3 days. Perhaps if we had tried a combination of clumping and crystal litter, it might have helped, but we were unhappy with the basic design and decided to return it. For us, the ScoopFree contains smells much better.

You kidding me?

I'm a cat owner whose had jut about all the "trick" boxes. I got sick of the clogged rakes, the burned out motors, and paying 20 bucks for a box of "receptacles" that last 2 or 3 days each with my 2 big cats.

How anyone can say that the litter robot is stinky is beyond my realm of comprehension. I *HAVE* had problems getting my little cat to use it properly, but cleaning his messes have amounted to FAR less than unsticking the rakes of other boxes.

My two BIG cats only need their garbage bags changed once every 10 days or so, and I notice almost ZERO smell except immediately after one of them uses it.

I have been so impressed by the performance of this box, that I've actually asked a reporter for my magazine to do an article about it.

If you're having the myriad of problems you are describing, I believe you must have either received a defective product, or are describing a different product. In addition to that, I've emailed customer support at least a dozen times about how I can get my little cat to go all the way in, and even AFTER business hours they reply within hours or sometimes minutes with behavioral tips/tricks that will help my cat adapt.

I haven't found anything better.

Best automated litter box we have used; virtually no odor, minimal litter use, easy maintenance even after a couple of years' use. Cons: noise, litter kicked out. Overall, though, even with a skittish Siamese, haven't found anything better.

I have 2 litter robots for 5/6 cats. Prior to these we had littermaids, a purrforma and three jumbo cat boxes with just about every kind of litter then crystals. I have a problem not only with smell coming from the waste drawer but in the globe as well. I didn't ever have odor issues with my first litter robot until it was time to open the drawer. The odor issues improved when I switched to world's best cat litter. I am guilty of going long times without emptying the drawer so I have used a litter box spray in between. Now I will be trying the charcoal suggestion mentioned earlier in this thread.

There are 2 things that bother me. One is that even after a thorough washing in hot water, the globe retains an odor. I don't know if it is the material it's made from or because I wash the globes infrequently. Yesterday, I resorted to using my bleach solution after washing the globe. I thought that perhaps just using a disinfecting cleanser wasn't enough. It seemed to help tremendously, but still there is the faint odor of urine. My second problem is that the litter clings to the top of the globe and deposits itself onto my cats. I find this to be extremely annoying and gross. For that reason, I am testing litter pearls in one of the boxes. This is the absolute cleanest, least messy litter available. Before getting an automatic box, we loved the crystals. They're a bit more costly, but I just can't stand my cats being dusted in used litter every time they do their business. I wish one of the improvements had been to increase the interior size of the globe. This would allow more room for my biggest boys, 14 & 16 lbs. My biggest is also guilty of not turning around and I often get to clean urine off the step and waste drawer. I will try putting the bag completely over the drawer like in the picture.

I have to say that even with my issuses and having to replace two malfunctioning bases, Litter Robot is the best automatic litterbox I have used. I hope they continue to provide excellent customer service and improve the product. My greedy self is already plotting how to get the new model. Are there any loyal customer specials or discounts?

The most effective way to clean the inside of the globe is to set it entrance-side up, fill the whole thing with warm water and scrub the insides with a toilet brush. Empty it, fill it again, and liet it soak for a while. Then empty it and dry it as well as you can but wait ten minutes or so beofre filling it with litter (you'll probably find more drops of water mysteriously appearing from nowhere).

When you put it back into operation, keep the base turned off for a few hours. The litter reservoir behind the screen will still be wet and you don't want clumping litter getting clumped in there.

There are many seams and places for old litter to hide in the globe and this will get them all. I normally use a power washer and that does a great job which dries very quickly.

Thanks for the tip. We live in an apartment. I tried to convince my husband to get me a pressure washer for Christmas just for the litter robots. He says it will have to wait until we get into a house. I tried using the clorox bath wand last time. It was ok except the pad kept rying to come off. I hadn't thought of using a toilet brush but might try it. I really dislike regular cleaning tools. I use disinfecting wipes not sponges, clorox toilet wand after throwing out the toilet brushes, and swiffer for mopping and dusting. It seems I do not have the new and improved globe, so that is probably part of the problem. I wish there was a tool just for cleaning it and doing toch ups. It would be nice to have a long handled tool that I could attach any wipe to for quick touch ups. It takes me all day just to clean and dry one globe. By then my back is in agony. That's why I wash those things so infrequently. I have to wash #2 this weekend, so tomorrow I will buy a toilet brush to see if it helps.

Sorry I forgot to mention...

Postby mskitty666 » Thu Dec 14, 2006 4:23 pm

One of the reasons I don't soak the globe is that all the water leaks out of it. If I fill it with the entrance facing the ceiling, the water drains out the seam in the middle. Water stays in if it is right side up, but I can't fill it very full.

Oh that's right. I put a small garbage bag (or any kind of plastic will do) on the inside of the drop holes. The pressure of the water keeps it from leaking.
