LR screen size

Postby gootzie » Fri Aug 08, 2003 9:17 am

After reading one of the forum messages, I got to wondering about the best screen size for my circumstance. I have 3 mature cats, but one is a real digger. He will dig at the clumps of urine until, some times, I can barely sift them out with the pooper scooper. Currently, I am using the World's Best Cat Litter, but have a bag of SwheatScoop waiting in the wings. So basically, I will be using a scoopable cat litter.

In addition, 2 of the cats do not cover their poop. Therefore, I am wondering when the LR rotates, if the uncovered poop is going to probably smear up the inside of the machine on the way out. I can't have the only cats in the world that have these same bathroom habits. Can I get some feedback out there? Thanks!

I'm going to throw this one over the the rep on here from Litter Robot, since I have no idea. I'll e-mail her and let her know you have a question, so you can get a quicker response.

Hope that helps.

Screen size

Hi Gootzie.

Let me give a general response about screen size, then address your specific concerns.

We have two screen sizes, standard and superfine.

If you are only going to be using a clay based scoopable litter, (they will always say "scoopable" or "clumping" on the package) then the fine screen is better at filtering out small clumps that can occur when a cat digs and breaks up what would be a single clump. Therefore, the litter stays cleaner and fresher smelling. The downside of the superfine screen is that it cannot be used with alternative litters such as World's Best Cat Litter, Litter Pearls, and Swheat Scoop.

If you use an alternative litter such as the 3 listed above, you need to order the standard screen to accomodate the larger grain of the alternative litters.

The screens can only be changed at the factory, so the best thing to do is try and decide what litter type you will use in advance.

As for your concern about your cats not covering their waste, the solid waste is coated by litter as the globe slowly spins, so the waste is not hitting the globe wall and smearing the interior. The exception might be Litter Pearls which I don't think stick to the waste. Perhaps a Litter Pearl user could comment better on this.

On an unrelated topic, I can tell you that if you have a cat that likes to dig, you should definitely order the Kick'n Kitty Guards. They keep the waste ports covered when the globe is in the home position and this keeps the cat from kicking litter out the side of the unit.

In short, I'd say that if you are sure you won't be trying alternative litters, get the fine screen. If you are using alternatives or think you may want to try them, get the standard screen.

Please note that the Litter Robot is NOT compatible with non-clumping clay based litters with either screen. Feline Pine is also not compatible with the Litter Robot because the pellets are too large to fit through even the standard screen.

Thank you cas for forwarding my concern/question to Lauren. And thank you Lauren for the informative reply. At this point, it looks as if I will be using WBCL or SwheatScoop (altho I haven't used the Swheat Scoop yet) or a comparable brand of same on a permanent basis. Basically, the standard screen is made for WBCL, etc., and due to it's nature to handle that type of litter, will not sift out the finer, broken pieces of the clumps. If clay scoopable litter was used with the fine screen, it would sift out fine broken up clumps of litter. Do I understand correctly? Evidently, either will cover the solid feces and coat it with litter before it has the opportunity to smear up the inside of the LR. That's good. I have one cat that has a tendency to digestive problems and soft stools crop up on occasion. It would not make for a happy camper to be scrubbing the interior of an automatic cat box frequently. It is understandable that in making a commercial product, "one size does not fit all". But the consumer should be armed with knowledge before purchase. Thank you for prompt reply to my inquiries. It is appreciated.
