I have been using dry enzyme by Natures Miracle to control odor in my litter boxes. You just sprinkle the powder on fresh litter. It breaks up the urine with enzymes and kills smell before it spreads to your abode. My house smells much better now. I bought it online a PetCo.com. :)

Cats that don't cover....

Postby ismirth » Thu Jun 28, 2007 2:06 pm

Hi,

I had one of the auto cat litter boxes, but it made a ton of noise and kept me awake at night. So I got rid of it, and instead got a box that is enclosed with a hole in the top (top entry), and then got a cheap one with a door that was about the same size, and taped them together. So Frank (the cat) went in through the door and down inside. It didn't matter that he didn't cover because the smell was trapped inside. Also, any litter that was stuck to his feet was left on the top, before he jumped out, so that kept the surrounding area clean too.

I also found that mixing the Citrimax cat litter with a crystal cat litter (not a crystal mix), and adding ammocat, and some of the powdered enzymes meant that I didn't smell it at all during the two week interval between changes. yes, that sounds like a complicated mix, but it is well worth it. removing any one item meant that it started to smell after only a few days. but with all 4 items, it would last 2 weeks. I actually think the Citrimax is the most important item though!

Petsmart stopped carrying it, and now I am seeking other places to buy it. It is amazing stuff.

Hope this all helps! There is no clumping stuff, so that should help those that don't want clumping:)

I am thinking CatGenie for you. There is a downside to the CG and that's the cycling time and perhaps odors that may result because of the cycling time.... But, if you are absolutely sick of the cat poop, urine, and the litter and your cats will use the CG, that would be a nice solution particularly if they have their own bathroom so the waste could easily be zipped down their own private toilet. And, for the most part, you would only be pushing a button to dispose of the waste or setting a timer, changing a cartridge once or twice a month... (that could get a bit expensive). There is no choice on litter with this box, either. Its an artificial washable variety. The last time I looked, Amazon was selling the CG at a reduced price. Or, at the CG website, you can purchase one on a payment plan and (get this) have a FOUR YEAR warranty... Now, that's amazing to me.

You could also try the Litter Robot as suggested by others. One advantage over the CG is the quicker and much shorter cycle time after the cats use it. It also cycles every time the cats use it and will cover the kitty waste pretty thoroughly with litter to dampen down the odor. You will still be dealing with the litter, waste, and odor, however. If the LR could go into the cats' bathroom you could simply remove the waste and dump it down the toilet (I have a small plastic tub in the litter drawer of the LR and it takes less than two minutes to dump the waste, clean the tub, sprinkle it with some baking soda, and replace it. I am using a mix of World's Best litter -the harder variety- and Nature's Miracle litter in the LR and am pretty happy with the results. The cats seem to like the litter.). The LR is a reliable litter box solution, uncomplicated but requires more maintenance than some others, is more challenging to clean, and some cats reject it (as cats do any of the litter box).

You might try crystal litter, if you haven't, with the cats to see what you (and the cats) think. Although the poop still needs scooping, the crystals absorb the urine, therefore way less scooping. The crystals will dry up the poop and as a result, much less odor. Crystals can be used in the LR or are the bedrock of the ScoopFree (another reliable box-- make or buy -- a reusable cartridge for the SF if you decide on this -- recommend Jack & Stan's dad who makes these). The SF is a box most cats adapt to quickly as long as they like the crystals and the SF is super easy to maintain. Crystals tend to be more expensive than other litters, however. To try out crystals with the cats, I recommend a variety that is easy on kitty paws. My cats gave up the crystals... maybe because I changed to a larger sized cheaper albeit rougher-on-the-feet variety (??). The Ultra Pearls have smooth edges and the two varieties that work in the SF seem to be easier on the paws.

Good luck on your decision! Let us know what you decide... and the results of the decision, i.e., what did the cats do!

I second nominating CG, especially if they have their own bathroom already! If you have the space, and you think your cats wouldn't something a little smaller than crystals but definitely bigger than clay (and NO DUST), I'd give it a try. I've used the LR for about a year and just finish acclimating my cats to the CG two weeks ago and ... I'm... so... happy. With LR, I STILL had to deal with litter, not to mention cleaning the LR which is no easy feat, but mainly dust dust dust everywhere! And then SOMEONE had to open the drawer and inhale all that stale, week-old waste to throw it away and put a new bag in. The drawer never smells nice, the globe was a pain to clean, and there was still litter everywhere (including our bed! AH!).

I hate litter so much. Crystals probably would have worked better, do your cats like crystals? But in any event, I'm so extremely happy with the CG that sometimes I sit and look around the house (and it's clean floors which wasn't the result of me running the Roomba just a minute ago) and just smile serenely.

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1739 is a journal of what it took to set up and acclimate our cats, in case you're looking for people's experiences with the products. It wasn't easy, but they're barely two years old, I think it was worth the two weeks of acclimation and effort in setting up for a nice long lifetime of no litter or even hauling cat waste!

The downside, of course there's a downside, is that you WILL smell poop until it cycles. There's no odor control whatsoever. Even so, my two cats only poop every 24-36 hours, and I run the CG twice a day anyway. If there's poop, I cycle. At most, I'll have to run it three times a day, and that hasn't happened very often. I like to run it right before I go to work and before I go to sleep - if it has poop between coming home from work and going to sleep, I just run it again. So, I have to stand the smell for about 10 minutes (the time it takes for it to scoop and drain the first time) and then it's Sani-Solution. I can handle 10 minutes, if it means I don't have to ... well, physically handle the waste itself ;)

I have two cats as well. i strated with clumping litter that worked fine except for the tracking and the cats smelling like their litter. I treid yesterdays news which worked good too. but didn't like finding the pellets all over the house. Now i'm using crystals which I like the best. All these litters seem to perform well with odor control. If your kitty won't cover his poo no litter is going to remedy that. I have a hood on my litter box which helps with the litter tracking and odor. When i first got my kitten she didn't cover her poo either and my other cat would go in a cover for her. Do you have a hood on your litter box? it migh help. I have the petmate jumbo box with hood and air filter, cost about $24 at Petco.

I checked into three automatic litter boxes cause I am so tired of cleaning that box. Litter robot, Sccopfree, and Catgenie.

i chose the Scoopfree but thay all have great advantages it is just a mtter of preference.
