Help for a picky kitty

Postby zetta » Wed May 21, 2003 3:00 pm

Let's hear everyone's suggestions for getting a picky kitty to use the litterbox.

So far, the only thing that has worked for my picky kitty is daily scooping using his preferred clumping litter, and changing all the litter out weekly. 2 boxes for 2 cats, although they both use both. When dissatisfied, he dumps near the box, and finds soft places to wet.

I'm trying to transition him to either the LitterFree, or going outside, but haven't had much luck yet.

The LitterRobot has satisfied our picky kitty. He protest peed during the LitterFree experiments and whenever the box did not meet with his approval. One of the advantages of moving was to get away from the damage he did to our last place.

He seems to love the LR since its clean for him all the time. That's his requirement: a clean box. The LR seems to pass the test for him.

The other time he was bad about using the box was when the new kitten arrived. This led to more protest peeing. For this sort of problem, the vet gave him valium for two weeks. Apparently, his stress level was too high to cope so he was acting out. (We're amazed and thankful that the move hasn't instigated another protest.)

Conclusion: be sure there isn't a psychological or stress-related reason for your kitty's behavior. If you can pinpoint something like a new person or animal in your house, then maybe your cat needs some help coping. A good vet can help you with these behavioral issues.

Also, cats can act out this way if there is something wrong medically - like an infection. You may want to rule that out, too.

If its just a demand for better service for The Royal Prince, you may want the try the litter robot or your current fastidious box routine. What's that saying, "Dogs have masters. Cats have staff."

Good luck.

Try 'Feliway' spray. It is available from your vet, and from some online pet stores. It is a pheramone (sp?) that comforts your cat. It is labeled for use on cats who won't use their litter boxes or are stressed for some other reason, and it worked like a dream in getting my cat adjusted to LitterFree initially.
