Good box for a 'digger'?

Postby memilanuk » Tue May 04, 2010 11:22 pm

Hello all,

I found this site while trying to find a solution for my LM Elite Mega thats on the fritz (again).

The thing is... if it was just one of my cats, I think it'd be completely trouble free. She gets in, does her thing, gets out. No problem.

The other cat... is a whole 'nother story. She's one of those I call 'diggers'. I mean, she'll pause while *eating*, no where near a box, and randomly paw the floor next to the bowl and then go back to eating. In the litter box... she gets in and digs around vigorously for a couple *minutes* in a clean box, throwing litter everywhere. She piles it all up against one side, out the entrance, up in the tracks, behind the rake... pretty much anything and everything that could possibly make the unit jam or malfunction. If I didn't know better, I'd swear she was doing it on purpose!

Any ideas or suggestions on how to handle this, or a automatic litter box that might handle this nutty cat?

You dont want a litter robot. I had a cat that would dig to the center of the earth if she could, and still not find the perfect spot to pee in. She ripped the rubber liner of the robot 4 times. Foolisly, I kept replacing it. You need a real high sided rubbermaid container or someting to keep the litter in the box. All of the automatic boxes have pretty low sides for a digger. the scoop free is similar to the LM, only better IMO but it has low sides too. My cat died before I could find her the magic box.

The Clevercat Top Entry Litter Box would be a good one. Not electronic. Can order from Amazon. About $27.00. Or you can make your own Clevercat by buying a large rubber/plastic storage box with a lid. Trace a hole on one side of the lid with a dinner-sized plate. Cut out the hole for the cat's entry door. You'll want to leave enough solidity and room on the lid for your cat to get up and stand on it and enter the litter box from the hole on top of the box. And, of course, the hole on top should not be cut so close to the edge of the lid that it compromises closing the lid. I fixed up two boxes for my cats before trying out the LR. They used them just fine. Very little litter is tracked with these boxes.

I also have a "digger". Although she has never destroyed the LR lining as did Abbey's cat, she manages to create a small mountain of litter on the LR step with remains on the floor and step when she's really into burying whatever she considers so offensive.

My favorite non-automatic litterbox

So far I don't think there's an automatic litterbox solution for a digger. My new favorite non-automatic "litterbox" is a large size garden trug (about 13 gal. capacity). A trug is a round, flexible plastic tub with a flat bottom and handles. Used as a litterbox, it would be great for diggers as well as cats that don't squat, don't like enclosed spaces, or like to kick litter. It's easy to cut an opening in the soft plastic anywhere you want, customized for your cat (this is also great for elderly cats with mobility issues). Also, trugs are cheap! I found mine on sale for $5 at Home Depot. And since the sides of the plastic are flexible, you can actually fit your litterbox into odd-shaped locations. I actually had mine squeezed between a motorcycle's front wheel and engine.

I use a sifting box to help clean it - no scooping! I just pick up the trug by the handles and dump the litter into a sifting box (two parts, a sifter and a bottom box). If there's anything stuck to the bottom of the trug, I loosen it with a spatula. Then I dump the waste from the sifter into the trug. Finally, I transfer the waste into a bag or receptacle, and dump the clean litter from the bottom box back into the trug. This process might sound a little complicated, but I swear, it's MUCH faster and does a better job than scooping. The sifting box can also be placed in front of the trug's opening, instead of a mat, to catch any stray stuff.

This is a really good - and actually acceptable size - litter box. I use it without the door part so there is a sort of "moon roof" but the sides are still enclosed and there is an overhang in the door area that keeps litter inside.
