Fresh step dual crystals?

Postby michaela1 » Thu May 21, 2009 7:26 am

I noticed that the price of the fresh step dual crystal litter is much better than the plan crystals. I have a scoop free ( a bit of a misnomer) and the litter is just too expensive and lasts barely 2 weeks with one cat. I just bought the forever tray thanks to this forum and was wondering if I could order the fresh step dual crystals to use with that and my automatic scoop free litter box? I can get a 25 lb box for $18 but I did notice it has clay AND crystals. If not what is the cheapest brand of crystal I could use with this box? I'm sorry if this is discussed elsewhere.

Thanks!

I don't think the dual crystals will work. The ScoopFree is not made for things that clump with liquid waste. The waste storage will fill up almost every day with 2 cats, I bet. If you want to use clay you're better off with a littermaid. But be warned that the littermaid/clay combination is not nearly as clean and odor-free as the scoopfree/crystals combination. Take it from someone who often has both as I have a cat that is picky and really only likes clay.

I only have one cat, but thanks, I was afraid of that.

Maybe you could get more than a week out of your crystals if you only have one cat. The thought that dry food is the way to go when using scoopfree is a myth. Dry food has more additives that create more poop and causes the tray to fill up quicker. I don't know what you feed your cat but you might try a very high qaulity canned food and cut down on the dry food. That might make the crystals last longer

When I had two cats I could go two weeks bofore having to replace the crystals. Now I have three cats and I have to replace crystals and clean the box once a week.

I went out of town for a few days and the cats ate only dry food while I was gone causing big blobby poops. Yuck

It's really more the crystals being saturated so quickly. She eats a combination. She loves the elegant medley canned food so she gets that and usually one of the more health varieties of hard food. I'll try the forever tray and maybe stirring the crystals more often. I'll see how far 8 lbs will go!
