Litter box covers

Postby uppitycracker » Tue Jan 01, 2008 6:24 pm

I had a cover on my box for a while and my cat kept using the floor instead. Granted this was relatively soon after I had moved into my new apartment and that may have had something to do with it but I'm not sure I want to try it again just in case she starts pissing on my clothes. I want to get an automated litte rbox but I've heard bad things about the LitterMaid and at least the majority of the others seem to have covers.
Are there any decent automated litter boxes that don't require a cover to work well and not make a mess?

My ScoopFree doesn't have a cover on it. It's an optional feature to add on most of them.

I think the litter robot is the only one that is covered.

Does the ScoopFree work well for you? Is it a pretty decent size? My cat is kinda big so if the box is smallish, she tends to pee over the side.

I love my ScoopFree! But my cat took to it and the crystals from the very minute I put the box in her potty place.

I hear some cats do have issues with using crystals though, so before buying a SF I'd go buy some crystals and test them out in a normal litterbox. If your cat refuses to use them then you wont have to go through the motions to return the SF and can try other open litter boxes.

My cat fits fine in the box, but I think she's just medium size, 13 lbs. Someone with a large cat will have to answer that question for you.

Oh... btw, I use a Forever Tray, not the cartridges. If your big cat pees alot and you need to change the litter more then monthly, it can get expensive to purchase those cartridges every time. If the SF works for you I'd highly recommend getting the Forever Tray too. It'll pay for itself pretty fast. :)

I went out the other night and got one. After doing a bit of research, I noticed there's a 90 day money-back guarantee and I figured it's worth a try. If the cat doesn't figure it out by then, I can just get my money back (plus PetSmart is just a few feet from where I work so it wouldn't be a huge pain to return it). TG for that one. Once I figure out if it works or not, I'll probably get one of those Forever Trays. It looks like it might be a good alternative.

I was going to get some crystals and mix them into the litter but got stupid and forgot to grab that when I was in buying the SF. I'll have to stop and get some on next time I'm out.

I set it up and my cat freaked out and wouldn't go near my bedroom for a few hours and then it took two more to lure her to the box with cat treats. At least she doesn't seem afraid of it any more. It seems like it's the perfect size too - almost exactly the same size as my old box (not including the actual machine part of course).

Thanks for the help!!

How is it working for you so far?

My cat too gave it a "what the heck is this?" look at first, but wasn't scared of it. And when it cycled ,wow, was she fascinated with that. Actually started to come running to watch it every time she heard it start. Now she could care less about it, it's only her toilet flushing just like mommy's does. :D

Cat's still scared to death of it. It's kind of fun to mess with her by pushing the button a lot (and, you know, I'm hoping hearing it a lot will help her ignore it. I switched her regular litter for the crystals and she's at least getting used to those so hopefully she'll venture into the new one soon :)
