$500 of useless auto litter boxes in the garage

Postby BengalsRock » Sun Sep 09, 2007 7:31 pm

I am looking for a no scoop no fuss no muss litter system that REALLY WORKS!!

I started with the old LitterMaid and I really liked it. I had the large version for multiple cats. The motor burnt out so I went and grabbed another. The new and improved version which is not new nor improved. Littermaid ruined a good thing when it redesigned this system

next I purchased the Fresh step automatic litter box which I LOVED until I my kittens became cats, then it could not keep up with their toilet habits so it's in the garage.

I tried to toilet train them, that system is also in the garage.

I can't stand the filthy state these things get in if left for a few days, I see no difference from a conventional litter box if you have to constantly clean and babysit it because poop gets stuck in the blades and system malfunctions. I have gone back to the old standard litter box because they are more reliable!

Is a CatGenie really worth the money?

I purchased my CatGenie in April of this year -- you cannot pry this thing outta my cold, dead hands. Is it perfect? No ... but no system is perfect. My unit works completely as advertised and I do not hesitate to recommend it to everyone. (In fact, I still have a hard time believing that I get this excited about a litterbox!)

The biggest challenge faced by CatGenie adopters is the acclimation period: we know cats are picky and some just refuse to use it (or even recognize it as a litterbox). I have three cats right now, one kitten just added a few weeks ago. It took about a week for her to understand that the CatGenie is her toilet; but once she figured that out, she has been using it without fuss ever since. (I run two automated-cleanings a day; I encounter the occasional clog due to my long-haired persian whose father -- my husband -- never brushes. /sighs)

I did a lot of research when I decided I was tired of the scooping, the smell, the dust everywhere and carrying heavy containers of litter upstairs every few weeks. When CatGenie began offering a 90-day trial period and 4-year warranty, I took the plunge and could not be happier about my decision. Again, it ain't perfect, but it's damned-well as close to perfection as a self-cleaning, automatic litterbox is going to get; I have accepted the 7-minutes of attention a month required by the unit (in the form of shaking the hose if clogged, installing a new cartridge or adding some fresh granules) in exchange for a scoop-free, dust-free, never-have-to-even-see-the-poop existence with my beloved cats.

My opinion: try it! What have you to lose? You have 90-days to test-drive it and make your own opinion. Any problems, and their excellent customer service will take care of you. Don't like it? Send it back for a full refund. I, for one, believe this is an awesome product that every cat owner should at least see for themselves. But that's just me. 8)

Thanks for your great reply!

I bought one but I got it on Ebay. I wonder if the warrentee will transfer...

I purchased granules and solution from catgenie direct but not 15 minutes after I submitted my order I read about the unscented solution you can get if you ask. I emailed them and within 30 minutes they replied and said they'd changed my order and to let them know how I like it.

ALL of this transpired in under an hour....I am impressed but I still wonder about the warrantee.

Your garage sounds like mine except only 1/2 is devoted to useless litter contraptions. The other 1/2 is As Seen On TV treasures. Damn late nite infomercials.

THis was a great testimonial, thanks! I'm leaning towards the CG (I have 10 indoor cats), so I would need 2 or 3 of these, but I'm SO tired of scooping!

Has anyone tried Litter-Robot or Scoopfree? We use the Litter-Robot and absolutely love it. I talked to someone who has a Scoopfree. She said she likes it but has only one cat.

Just loooooooooooooooove the Litter Robot. I have a LRII. Both of my adult cats use it exclusively. Knock on wood have NOT experienced any issues and it will be 2 years old in December. Love the fact it is so simplistic in how it gets rid of the waste . . . love the fact you don't need special "anything". I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Hi Abbytoo,

Yes, Abbytoo both of my cats are Devon Rex.

They are both retirees from different catteries. I got drove out to Michigan to pick up Miss Minnie (who was 9 years old when I got her). She is 10.5 years old & such a "little" darling. She only weighs about 6 lbs. and has oodles of soft, fluffy, wavy fur draped over her teeny tiny body. Sebastian is 4 1/2 years old and a strong, muscular boy. He is a retired stud cat from a cattery in Pennsylvania. Sebastian's coat is much thinner, lays close to his body and is soft as angora -- with all the finger waves a Devon Rex typically has.

Don't you just love those pixie ears :D

My daughter said I should have called them "Salt & Pepper" . . . cute, but their names were already given to them many, many years ago. Both Minnie & Sebastian answer to their names and "fit" their names to boot.

It took a bit of time for Miss Minnie to agree to let Sebastian share her house and meowmy, but it wasn't too long before they were best buddies.

I'm happy with my not-quite-perfect SmartScoops. But someday I would like to try the CatGenie.

Had catgenie for 2 years. Never could depend on it if we were on a trip. It's always beeping when I get back. I scoop the poop out anyway, just so there's no backed poop smell when the thing dries. Worked great for an amount of time, now I really hate it. Have to manually run the cycle everyday due to error on water sensor.

I tried the Cat Genie - sent it back - too noisy, terrified my cats, stunk, etc. Nothing good to say about it. I tried litter maid - it's rake is a disaster. Tried petmate purrforma - sent that one back - the stupid think wouldn't even assembly correctly - pieces were not sized properly. Bought the litter-robot --- I LOVE it and so do my cats. Have had one for over 8 years. Expensive but well worth it. Have bought a second one.

I'm still a huge fan of the CatGenie, especially the older model 60 that with cartridges that can be refilled (using Benefect). I bought my first one from PetNovations, and two more from Craigslist. I haven't really haven't had any equipment malfunctions in 2+ years. I currently have 3 DSH cats, running 2 CGs, each on a 12-hour schedule (2 cycles a day). I installed separate water and drain pipes so the CGs could be on their own system.

I DO:
manually scoop any soft stools out of the bowl and into the hopper
clean the water sensor about once a month
break everything down and give all parts a good cleaning about every 4 months
frequently check to make sure there are no plumbing issues

I also have a LitterRobot, but none of my cats (including a stray I care for) like being enclosed while doing their business. Otherwise the concept and electronics seem simple and would be good choice if you have the space and an adaptable cat. That's my $300 "useless" litter box in the attic. Also, the stray cat was able to kill an old 1st gen. (but barely used) LitterMaid after about 6 months; I didn't want to use it because to me the LM is the biggest POS. The reality is, anything with a rake is going to slice through poops and make a giant mess.
