It seems to me that the liquid in the lower tray is going to evaporate long before one gets around to draining it, leaving residue with a nasty odor. A water flushing system would be better, even if you had to hook it up to a faucet temporarily.

As one who has bought every kind of litter apparatus ever invented, I dove head first into this one. I used to use the Kitty Privy which is a 2 part thing, similar to this one. It had a tray that you placed newspapers in and you set the actual tray which had slots in it, on top. The litter to be used is a waxed corncob material which is non absorbent. The pee would drain thru the litter into the bottom tray and be absorbed by the newspapers. Poops were scooped out. They looked like O'Henry candy bars! I used this system for years with no problem, until I couldnt find the litter anymore. A few years ago, Ifound the company on the web and ordered the stuff again. Then I ran into the same thing....couldnt locate the company for replacement litter. I see they are back once again. While searching for them, I came across the Littertray. it was not yet in production. I wrote back and forth with the inventor, anxious to order. I was jazzed on this. This new company seemed to have invented the ideal litter box by improving an existing one (kitty privy). The new one uses a silica type litter shaped like little balls (they roll all over the place). My cats HATED them. I bought 3 of them so they could each have their own. The 2 girls reluctantly used theirs once and cried. Milo gave me that look that he often does that seems to say "Are you on Crack??" He flat out refused to use it. They hate the litter. I tried to turn them into the kitty privy style by placing newspaper in the bottom tray and regular scoopable litter in the top. No good. It just got clogged up and was a bitch to clean. I tried using litter crystals, again unsuccessful. My cats dont like that kind of litter. I'm running out of room with all of thes discarded litter box contraptions! I'm about to the point of shoving a cork up each one of them! :?

Tres Chic LitterBox

Postby michaden » Wed Jun 02, 2004 8:17 am

I have a Tres Chic (LitterTray) system. In the beginning it worked great and there was practically no odor. However, the silica crystals break down and eventually end up in the lower part causing the "drainage" to slow. Also, my drain port began to leak and needed to have Vaseline applied to help seal the gasket. The regular crystals didn't take care of the odor as well. I still have cats using it (trying to get them into the Robot I just got) but if I keep it, I'll probably try to modify it for another type of litter. The urine in the bottom does evaporate and cause an uncleanable mess. I've thought about some type of nonporous litter that wouldn't get through the grate system (a friend suggested aquarium gravel- can't be much different texture than plain crystals) and then something in the bottom tray to help evaporate liquids before they smell (if it can be done). I'm wondering about the new Evaporator box I've read about... I've tried everything and hated the "sand on the floor" from clumping litter. That's why I tried the crystals, the TresChic (LitterTray), the LitterFree all before the Robot. In the end, I discovered it's less painful to walk on scattered "sand" in bare feet than it is to step on crystals, pearls, and plastic granules which all got scattered as well.

The very best litterbox, aside from the robot, I have ever found was a 2 part thing called Kitty Privy. They are/were based out of Plano Texas. That is where the one you are speaking of got the idea. Kitty Privy had it down, as far as I am concerned.

Their system had a lower tray that you put about 1 inch of newspaper in and then the upper tray that had drainage slots. The litter was corncob based. It was somehow 'treated' with a waxy substance that made it completely non pourous. The pee just slid right thru to the bottom section with newspaper which you emptied. Mine were in teh garage so I had no problem setting the top half on the floor while I dumped the bottom half into the garbage can. I swear there was NEVER any odor. THe litter lasted for a long long time and if you wanted to, you could wash it. I just replaced it a couple of times a year. I tried washing it when I was unable to find any more and it just wasnt as good.

I dont know what the company is doing now. I have tried to order several times off of their web site but got nothing. Seems like they may have called it quits.

that is the information from doing a WHOIS search. The web site is no longer up, however. I dont think I ever called to see what was going on with them, if you are interested in this thing, you may want to try calling them.

It really worked.

Gawd! I'm losing it. The above post is practically the same as my prior one. Sorry gang. The cat pee must be affecting me.
