Removing urine smell from carpet????

Postby llawsonpta » Sun Jun 10, 2007 6:32 pm

First, my sphynx cat got out last Sunday and was on a wild adventure for 36+ hours. Since he returned, I noticed a very prominent urine smell from our stairwell going into the basement. I don't know if the first night he couldn't hold it and peed or if he is using it sometimes or what. He is still using the CG, but this smell is awful. I bought "ODOBAN" from walmart yesterday that was with the Febreez stuff and it says it does pet odors. It now smells like cat pee and the odoban mixed together. When you walk down the steps it will about knock you down until you pass a landing at the bottom and then you can't smell it in the basement. The CG is in the basement. Anyway, anyone have any other ideas for removing the smell? This is a rental and we can't stand the smell anymore. Thanks for the help.

First, get a blacklight so you can pinpoint the exact location and size of the stain. Then, I'd try either Nature's Miracle, Get Serious, or Dr Elsey's cat urine removal program. Nature's Miracle is pretty widely available and does a good job of breaking down the proteins (according to my blacklight), but it has a weird smell (alcohol, citrusy) when it dries. Dr. Elsey's also does a good job, but it's hard to find, and it seems to take a while to get rid of the smell, which it implies on the bottle. Get Serious, which I found at PetSmart, does not use enzymes or bacteria, but still seems to zap the smell, and does a great job on stains. Just make sure you follow the instructions very closely. Unfortunately, one of my cats had a UTI recently, and I got the honor of trying some of these different things.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the info. Of course, we have had a blacklight at our house for probably 7 or 8 years and NEVER needed it. Well, we moved in Jan, are renting and building a new house and now I can't find the light for nothing. I asked my husband and he said, "well, it's in a box somewhere". Thanks so much dear. Anyway, I will try to find one. When you light it up, does it just glow? I know I have seen them use them on TV to find "other" fluids. Thanks again.

Check out this link. I have had great success with it and it's a lot cheaper.

You can find a cheap blacklight at Wal-Mart in the hardware section. I bought a fluorescent light for $8 and a black light bulb for $3 to replace the regular bulb. Cheapest blacklight I could find, and it's a LOT bigger and sturdier than the tiny piece-of-junk ones that come in those urine detector/cleaner kits the pet stores sell.
