If you are using the disposable cartridges and changing them weekly, then yes, it can become expensive. I use a Forever Tray though, not the cartridges.... buying that tray "and" the litter box is still less expensive then the Genie and Robot. Right now I use Mimi crystals from Walmart ($3.47 a bag, 4 lbs, perfect size) and change every three weeks. Do the math, I'm not spending nearly that much on my supplies.

The Scoopfree is not maintenance free (it's a name folks!), I do scoop out the poop bin every few days (very easy to do with the floating hinge on the Forever Tray), stir the crystals daily, and every few months I wipe off the plastic pieces (again very easy to do). Some ppl might ask, "Well what is the point if you still have to do all that?" The points are, for me.....

1. She will ALWAYS have a clean box bc the SF sweeps the poop under the bin and dissolves the urine.
2. i do not see or smell that poop or urine until it is time for me to get my nose close enough to it and scoop up the dehydrated little poops it swept up. (I understand ev.en the Robot requires a "very smelly drawer" to be emptied every few days.)
3. This small maintenence is on "my" schedule, not hers
4. I can leave for a dew days, even a week, and know she will be OK on her own.

I bet I could think of several more points. Anyone want to add them?. I will never go back to a manual box again... ScoopFree Rocks, as the kids would say! :D

Ahhh... but you can use crystals with the LR and therefore have as little odor in it as the SF -- the poo smells the same in both boxes -- its the use of crystals in this case, not necessarily the machine, that makes a difference when it comes to odor... :)

The biggest complaint on the Scoop Free is the cost, because most reviewers say it works well, you just have to apply money at every turn.

The CatGenie is new to me, I'll have to check it out, but I know already it won't fit in our tiny bathroom. I love my Robot, and never had to adjust it, even though it's three years old now. And it's never smelled until the kitten came along, but adding cedar litter to our existing bed fixed that.

For my cats, the Robot turned out to be its own lure, since there was the clean litter again! It lets three cats share a box with no problems, and in a cramped apartment, that's a great selling point.

I have owned a scoop free for about a month now. Before the scoop free I used a manual box with crystals. After making the investment in the forever tray I am not spending any more money than I would have with the manual litter box. I replace the cystals every 7 days.

I do like the box even though it does not perform as advertised. I have two cats and the longest I have been able to go without tending to the box is three days.

I had to change my cats diet to all dry food else the poop would be too soft and cause a mess in the scoopfree. I haer you can have the same issues with the LR.

I chose the scoopfree over the litter robot because after reading some of the posts here I get the impression that the LR is wonderful when it is working and a nightmare when it isn't. The scoopfree is a very simple device and very easy to clean.

I'm keeping the scoopfree and will probably get a catgenie one day. Hopfuly they will have found a way to reduce the cycle time on catgenie by then.

The Scoop Free is a simple box and my cats used it quite easily; however, some of your comments seem to apply more to the Cat Genie than the Litter Robot. Soft poop is not a problem in the LR because the rotation of the globe coats it in litter and then deposits it in the drawer whereas it can be a mess in the CG according to the posts. Second, there are few posts that indicate problems with the LR II "not working". It's quite reliable - 100% of the time in my case. The down side to the LR is that its more complicated to clean than the SF.
