Dog puking up cat litter, need a solution!!!

Postby unicornvr » Tue Mar 06, 2007 5:02 pm

I'd prefer an automatic box, but will resort to a top loading box like the Clever Cat. My kitties use World's Best cat litter in the booda clean step currently. The male pees down the side (so the pee clumps are caked on the side) of the box and weighs in at 13-14lbs (not fat). The female has perfect poos and pee clumps and is 10 lbs.

I'm not too bothered by noise, but I would be very bothered by smell if it gets ingrained in the unit. I try to clean out the boxes twice a day. On the rare occaision like today that I forgot to attend to the box this morning, I came back to 6-8 enormous piles of vomit with cat feces. Not pleasant.

The dog climbs baby gates and is almost as small as the cats. There's also no place in the apartment to put the box up. Just gross.

Any ideas on which box would be best for me? TIA!

Your going to have to find some place to put it where the dog can't get to it. While eating cat poop is desgusting it isn't very harmful to the dog. However, eating the litter can kill the dog as it obstructs their bowels.

Google, "dog eats cat litter". A lot of sites mention it.

Oh ACK! Just plain ewww. I don't have any suggestion for you. Why do dogs DO that? They see a dirty litter box and think "Yum! A desert buffet" i have heard there is something you can put on the poo to make it not so appealing to dogs, but what in the heck would make cat crap taste worse?? ewww

There is an additive that Dr. Foster and Smith sell in their pet catalogue that you add to cat food and it is suppose to make the poo taste nasty to dogs. I bought it, but haven't tried it yet. Not sure how well it works, but they have had it for years so figure it must work at least somewhat.

Dawn :)

I just cant imagine what would make cat crap taste any worse than it probably does. Yikes! and who tested the stuff? lol

Thanks guys. There was no easy solution because my dog is the same size as my my cat. I couldn't think of a place to put a litterbox high up either in a smallish place :/ I bought the litter robot and am hoping my large cat will start to use it soon. We'll see!

Hi Unicornvr,

Sorry to hear about your problem. The good news is World's Best Cat Litter is corn-based litter and therefore digestable. You'd probably need to do some research to make totally sure, but I don't think there's an immediate health risk on your dog.

Since you're willing to buy an LR (I'm not sure if you actually have it yet?), that means you might want to look into a CatGenie. The CG uses synthetic litter, and drains pee so there's no pee clumps. There will still be a problem with poop hanging around until a cycle, but depending on whether or not your dog likes the litter vs the cat poop that might not be an issue. Also, the CG uses a sani-solution that might have a scent that your dog won't find.. edible.

The LR should work if it's the poop that attracts your dog, as long as the dog doesn't follow your cat immediately. Seven minutes! Perhaps if you put the opening toward the wall so your dog can't see that it's been used... granted I'm sure he'd smell it first.

Good luck!

Well I have tried *everything* to get my cat to use the LR and he adamantly refused. I've had it six weeks and tried praise/treats/confinement/feliway etc. Nothing worked. Back to square one.
The cat is now confined to one room. Why are cats so impossible?
