Cleaning Automatic Water Dispenser?

Postby sage » Tue Apr 12, 2005 6:20 pm

I recently purchased an automatic water dispenser and both cats are doing great with it. My question is how often should you change out the water or clean the dispenser? I have a friend that does it every two days, but she has 12 cats. Any feedfback would be appreciated. Sage

I clean my Drinkwell every couple of weeks when I replace the filter. It's usually full of gunk by then even though the water coming out of it is still clean.

Electric Drinking Fountain

Thanks Scott! I have the Petmate Fresh Flow and I think I am going to return it. I like to be able to tell how much water the they are drinking and I can't do that with this. Also when I took it apart to clean, there was quite a bit of hair floating in the water. I think I kept their water cleaner than this does. :) Something else that I read a while back was to feed them their water and food in ceramic or stainless bowls to avoid the black fungus they can get on their noses. I don't see why you couldn't tell how much water they're drinking with the Fresh Flow. You can see how much water has left the reservoir. If the reservoir is empty, fill it and watch how much of it immediately empties into the tray. That means they've drunk one reservoir plus that water that emptied from the full one.

Whenever I refill the reservoir I use a turkey baster to get rid of any visible junk in the tray. It usually pretty clean.

My cat just loves drinking the swirling moving water. He never drank much water out of a boring old bowl.

Automatic Drinking Dispenser

Thanks Scott for the tip about using the turkey baster. Great idea! I wanted them to drink more water also, that is why I bought it the fountain. I live in Arizona and it is already very warm here, so I assumed that most of the water was evaporating. I'll have to give it another go and watch more closely. Sage

I live in Portland so I don't know much about how water evaporates. :)
