hairballs

Postby gootzie » Fri Nov 11, 2005 11:31 am

My 6 mo. old kitten developed such a bad hairball it was blocking her intestines. I've had cats cough up hairballs before but never one that was life threatening. She was pulled through at the vet's with massive doses of cat lax and fluids to help rehydrate her.

I was using a really good brand of cat food, but I switched all my cats to Purine One Special Hairball formula after reading that soy lecithin will help break up the fat that binds the hairball together. The soy lecithin made sense and a better way to go than forcing vaseline type stuff down 5 cats. I plan on going back to my original brand of cat food and sprinkle soy lecithin granules in soft food and/or chicken baby food on a regular basis in addition to their regular dry food.

BTW, any one that has a cat with FUS can help unblock their cat with 500 mg of Vit C. Use it until the cat is unblocked and then follow up as often as you feel necessary to keep your kitty clear. I mix the proper amount of powdered Vit C with chicken baby food. Do not use more than 500 mg in one day and do not use Ester C.

Hopefully passing this along might help some one.

For short haired cats, the rubber pad brushes are great. My cat likes the rubber pad so much he brushes his face on it if it's laying around.

I think good ol brushing is the best way to avoid or at least, reduce the dreaded hairballs. I use those rubber pad thingies and haven't seen a hairball in years. None of the 3 cats I have currently, have ever had a problem with hairballs, but in the past, I have had cats that constantly had them. I never had to force the petromalt or vaseline on them. Most of them, loved the stuff! They would line up for a lick of the tube. THose that didn't, simply got a dab of it spread on their paw, which they quickly cleaned off.
