Cats and Plants

Postby ahlecce » Sat Feb 20, 2010 1:38 pm

I was wondering if anyone has any idea of some plants that are non-toxic that cats won't eat. I have seven cats and they love to eat plants and flower. Some oftheir favorites are baby's breath, roses, and african violets. I am trying to find something that is non-toxic and they won't eat. My cats don't just nibble on these, they devour them. As soon as I come in the house with something, they all come running and surround me until I put the plant or flower down and then they all attack it and eat it all up. I feed them very high quality food, Wellness and Nature's Variety in canned, kibble and raw. Any suggestions will help. Thanks.

Grow them some grass they can nibble on and maybe only have hanging plants for your house. Growing them some grass is super easy. Use only smallish pots though, so they don't dig and pee in the pots. here is a good article about cats and vegetation. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?aid=373

Thank you for the link. I have gotten cat grass in the past and it gets devoured too. When I go to the grocery store and buy a head of lettuce, I have to make sure that I put it away first thing, or else Sneezes will dig through the bags and find it and start eating it. When I make a salad, I have to make him one too or else he jumps up on the table and starts to eat mine. I've asked the vet about it, and they just said that he must just like it. He loves grass, lettuce, and plants. Does anyone else have a cat that is this crazy for greens? He also loves the leaves off of celery, radishes, and pretty much anything else like that. Thanks again for the link and for any other advice anyone has.

My new kitty, Stormy, likes salad. In fact, I haven't seen anything she won't eat! She loves sweets. I attribute it to the fact that she was dumped in a storm drain early in her life and spent a month down there. people were apparently tossing food in for her to eat and since that was all there was, she ate everything. Asshole people, why didn't they help her get out instead of throwing food down for her?

My dad used to have dogs that would pick the mandarin oranges off of the tree and eat them whole. They also had a salad everynight.

I saw your post and watched the video of Stormy in the drain. I was so glad that you adopted her.

That is good to know that Sneezes isn't the only one eating the salad. I was worried that something was really wrong with him that my vet didn't have the scope of knowledge to diagnose or treat. I love all of my fur babies and would do anything to help them. I think that I will go and make Sneezes a salad now! :D
