SMELL

Postby mgerrity » Mon Aug 24, 2009 6:18 am

Hello,

I bought a litter robot, and upon the initial use of it, I find that the drawer smells so awful. Since the first use, I have washed the drawer out and put a plastic Bin that fits perfectly inside that I can line with a garbage bag. However, even with this, EVERYTIME I empty the robot and pull the drawer out, the smell is so awful, I gag... It then lingers in the kitchen for a while. Also, everytime the robot does its rotation, the smell seeps out... IT is so awful... Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Cassie

here is what I have found that might help you.

when I got my little robot the little fuzzy strip that is like a brush that the ball sits on, came unglued, and had fallen into the drawer. I had to re-glued that thing, it helps to keep the smell locked in the drawer.

then I got rid of the charcoal sponge filter thing that is in the drawer. I found that if the cat pee goes outside and onto the step it goes down into the drawer but is absorbed by that sponge thing. no matter how much I washed it it still stunk, so I threw it away. the next thing I did was I got some arm and hammer cat little box powder and I sprinkle it into the new bag each time I put a new bag in. that alone has helped the smell immensely. I can honestly say I don't have a lot of smell anymore.
I also wash the ball itself once every 2 to 3 months completely with water and soap. like washing my car. then I add fresh little and the smell is removed completely for a few months.

I also do not run the little box all day long. I run it once in the morning, once in the afternoon (sometimes) and once in the evening. this way the little has a chance to absorb the smells and the urine. If there's a poop that didn't get covered and is smelling I do run it then.

I also spray the inside of my litter robot with anti-icky poo at night every other night and let it do its job and dry over night and that also helps to keep the smell down.

hope that helps...

You might try cleaning/spraying with rubbing alcohol. I have the step covered with clear plastic -- the clear plastic is taped to the underside of the drawer (which kind-of holds it) -- which may hold odors in. But here's something interesting that occurred a few weeks ago. I have a small tub in the drawer to catch the waste and I empty the tub several times a day, wash, and spray with rubbing alcohol before I place it back in the drawer. I also line the drawer with a plastic bag -- thin, white. So, I left town for about four days and boarded the cats while I was gone. Before I left, one of the cats used the LR, pooped, and I did not bother to empty the drawer. When I returned home four days later, the LR had an odor. I emptied the tub, cleaned it, put it back in the LR, but I continued to smell a foul odor. It was coming from the drawer. Since I covered the holes in the LR, ventilation is minimal and the odor of the poop was being absorbed into the plastic bag that I used to line the drawer of the LR. Once I replaced the plastic bag and went back to my old routine of dumping the soiled litter, cleaning the tub, etc., the LR was fine.
