Choosing a litter for too much pee!

Postby Ellusionz » Tue Jun 23, 2009 5:30 am

I love the Worlds Best but decided I'm trying to save money and one 17lb bag lasts about 2 weeks, $18 every two weeks is kinda pricey. So I'm looking into finding another litter I can use. I got a 20lb container of the Tidy Cats, Small Spaces. But I swear its like glue to the scooper and one of my cats pees ALOT, I think this one has lasted about a week. Bigger amount for half the price, but doesn't really save me much this way! Anyways just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on something else I can try. I've never used a non clumping clay, how do those work? Thanks for any help y'all litter connoisseurs can give me :)

We had the same problem with our 2 cats having too much pee, we used crystals and failed so badly. One bottle ($15) supposed to last for 1 month for 2 cats. But it didn't even last for 1 week!!! On the 4th day of the newly used crystals, one of my cats started to poo outside the box because the litter started to smell bad due to too much pee (even constantly stir doesn't help at all).

We tried other alternatives, and eventually we got the advice from our breeder. Imagine breeder has more than 20+ cats, what litter do they use? The answer is wood pellet. The wood pellet for fuel that can be found in fireplace section at Lowes/Home Depot. DO NOT buy it from Pet supply stores, you will get ripped off so badly. It is usually PINE. For around $6 you get 40 lb and it can last more than 1.5 month for 2 cats. Amazing. The good thing about wood pellets is that, pee becomes sawdust and it never gets the stinky smell like crystals when there is too much pee. Well, you need to stock them up in winter time because some hardware stores treat wood pellets/fireplace as seasonal items.

Unfortunately, there is no automatic litter machine for wood pellet. But it does solve our problem.

Ellusionz

See my post in the Litter forum about chicken layer crumbles.

Current cost is about $12.00 for 50 lbs.

It's the poor-woman's TWBCL.

If you can afford it look at the CatGenie. I had a male who drowned any regular type litter. With the CatGenie he would have to pee almost a gallon at a time to even start to upset this thing:)

When I had my Littermaids, I started out using WBCL. It was nice, but I found that it smelled like pneomonia from the urine after about three days. I have seven cats and had three Littermaids. After some searching and only trying premium clumping litter due to the requirements of the Littermaid, I found Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra. This litter is the best!! I would get a 40 lb. bag from my pet store for $12.95. It is made by the same company that makes Cat Attract. I tried the Cat Attract, but I went through that stuff like crazy. The Precious Cat Ultra clumped really well for large amounts of urine. And there wasn't any smell. I don't like Fresh Step, because your cat comes out of the littebox smelling like a perfume factory. That can't be good for them. With seven cats and three Littermaids, two 40 lb bags would last me 3-4 weeks, and that included filling up each box to start. With other litters, I went through way more than that. At first my local pet store didn't carry it, but they special ordered it for me. Now that I got rid of my littermaids and switched to cat genie's, they started carring it in stock all of the time. I guess it was because I was telling everyone that it was such a good litter and people were calling to order it for themselves. And the ones whom I told them about it are still using it.

Thanks for this info. My male cat has a lot of pee and we use the LitterMaid too. I'm going to look for this brand.
