It Breaks My Heart!

Postby Mima » Wed Jul 30, 2008 5:05 pm

I have again rescued a litter of adorable kittens. They have already adopted me and are doing very well. I have tried calling a number of shelters and have found out that there is a real problem this year. Cats are being abandoned because so many people have lost their jobs so they can't care for their pets. I hope everyone would make sure that when they take in a pet it isn't a temporary responsibility and to make sure that their pet doesn't increase the population unnecessarily. I guess when they put the cat outside they hope the "problem" resolves itself and they do not need to think about it any longer. Just in our county alone the number of pets being euthanized is astronomical. All cat lovers really need to aid in the problem and help the no-kill shelters with volunteer time or financial support. This will end the unwanted litters and the cruelty to the feral cats. I wish there was an easy way to educate everyone so that this doesn't break anyone's heart.

You can educate people, but people don't care. It breaks my heart too. I had five cats for many years then there was this house that people moved out of and left 2 adult cats and 10 kittens to fend for themselves. Evidently the neighbor took the two prettiest kittens and I took 8 kittens and 2 adults. I tried very hard to find homes for them with no luck. The two no kill shelters (in 2004) had no room and I would not take them to a kill shelter. So I ended up getting all spayed and neutered. Now I have 19 cats. To many ats. But people do not care enough about animals to spay/neuter. They are to selfish.

I have a saying that makes people mad, but I stand by it. "Animals are people, and people are animals". Sadly I've found this saying true more often than not. Whatever people want to say about me with so many cats... they can say. But no one can ever accuse me of adding to the problem of unwanted animals. ALL my animals, male or female are loved enough to be fixed. And all are welcome to sleep on my bed and live forever in my heart.

Wow! What a wonderful outcome for the extended family! You were also faced with the same problem I have with this new litter. People dumped their "problem" and someone else took
responsibility. No one can judge you on your decision and how dare they anyway! It gets my BP up when it is so unneccesary. I wish I were allowed to keep them all but I am in a townhouse
where there is a limit of one pet and I am breaking the rule already by the two I rescued 2 years ago. I have found a no-kill shelter in the next county that will take them. Four of the
five are ready and are not shy when people come to see them. Just the one that was so "hissy" has still not come around so I think I will keep him a while longer to help him adjust better.
Even when he plays he will not share what he has and will hiss at the littermates. He is aggresive and very bossy with the others. The gentler ones will not play with him long because of
the roughness. Must be the feral in him and it is his instinct. Maybe you can advice me on what to do are have any tips to help the little fire ball. I know if he goes to the shelter now he will
revert to the wildness and not be a good candidate for adoption. Thanks for listening!

Mima,
Hi,
I just now saw your post. Sorry it's been so long. I too have some aggression problems. Especially, strangely enough, from the two girls who are the "lowest on the totem pole". They fight like crazy and the one girl, Precious Dawn, has been hairless on the rump, thighs, belly and legs. Evidently from stress.

I got a medicine from the vets that seems to have helped this. I think it has "mellowed her out" stress wise. Perhaps it will mellow your kid from being so aggressive. Ask your vet.

Here is the info on the bottle:
AMITRIPTYLINE HYDROCHLORIDE TABLETS USP 10 mg
Give 1 tab(s) Once a day as directed. Use medication until gone.

Actually I'm going to try this on the four "pissers" (that is the ones who like to "mark"). I sure hope it will help that. But it does seem to mellow out a nervous cat.

Good luck. Email if you have any questions.
