Kitty poops on carpet instead of in Genie

Postby KerrBear » Thu Aug 12, 2010 1:12 pm

We have 3 young cats ages 4 months, 5 months and 6 months. All of them pee in the Cat Genie, but one of them poops in the other room on the carpet. When we adopted them we had 2 regular litterboxes which they all used with no problem. Then about a month ago we bought the Cat Genie. We had read that one Cat Genie would be fine for 3 cats.

Do you think that they need another Cat Genie? Or do you think we have to try to reacclimate the one cat again? Or do you think that because she is young she just can't hold it and will grow out of it?

The reason I asked about them being young is because of this. One day I was in the bathroom while the Cat Genie was on a clean cycle. Our youngest jumped onto the bathroom counter, got into the sink and peed. Cute? YES! Smart? YES! Desirable? Well moreso than doing it on the carpet.

What should we do?

Thanks in advance!!!

From experience, I have found that some cats like to pee in one place and poo in another. I'm thinking the reason you probably didn't have this problem before the cat genies is because you had two litterboxes, therefore the one cat was happy. I currently have six cats and have out two cat genies and one littermaid. I can tell you that NONE of the cats ever poo in the cat genie that is the bathroom. They will pee in it, but they will not poo in it. I also had to switch from clay litter in the littermaid to crystals, or else they all stopped using the cat genies and used the littermaid. Maybe if you got another cat genie, that would solve your problem. If one of them starts urinating outside the litterbox, take them to the vet and have blood work done to test their kidneys.

My wife and I have three cats who are siblings and are all over 1 year old. One of my cats is a confirmed carpet pooper and we're not sure if the others are pooping in there either. We're pretty sure they pee in there because the room does not smell of pee, but they all will just not poo in there. We have just been baffled as to what's going on. We got the CG almost 2 months ago and followed the cat acclimation guide to the letter and we're still having this problem. If you do end up getting another CG, I would love to hear your results. I'm sorry I don't have any helpful advice. I wish I did. Good luck! Please keep in touch as to your results. Thank you. :)

P.S. To anyone else reading this, please give any tips you have regarding this problem and ASAP please. Our 90 day thing is coming up and if things aren't working out by then, we're definitely sending the CG back to them.

We just got the second CG a week ago. The first day there was a poop in front of one of the CG's. I think they didn't realize that even though one was in a cleaning cycle, the other wasn't. We showed them that there was one that was available and I think they get it now. There hasn't been any poops on the carpet since then. There was a little teeny poop a couple days later in front of the box, but it looked like it was just a "cling-on" lol. Anyway, I guess the problem we were having with just the one CG was just a matter of them not being able to hold it when it was in use. So far so good with the additional CG!! *Crossing our fingers!*

Have you tried putting the poop from the carpet into the CG and showing them? That usually helps too.

Good luck!!!

I'm REALLY glad that the second CG is working for you, not only for your benefit, but because it gives me hope that if I get a second one, that it might work for us. I'd love to hear more in the future about how you're cats are doing with the two CG's. Thanks. Oh, and by the way, we have tried putting their poop in the CG and then putting them in the CG with it, but that's not working either unfortunately. I think one or two of the cats are protesting, because they really liked their litter boxes.

Just a follow up...

It's been about 3 months now since we got the second CG. There have been no mishaps until today. CG#1 was on a clean cycle and a cat was in CG#2. Another cat had to do her business and couldn't wait so she pooped right in front of the box on the litter matt. Not a huge deal though. We can just lift the matt and dump the poop into the CG and then wash the matt outside.

That said we are LOVING the CG. No more buying and lugging litter, scooping poop and pee 3 times daily X 2 boxes and no cat box stink. I've almost forgot what a pain it used to be. Actually when we have people over they are amazed we have 3 cats because it sure doesn't smell like it!! :D

They should have another cat genie for them to have it available. Anyway, you just have to clean your carpet. You can use a baking powder to remove the smell.
