Can you tell us a little more about consumption and performance already?

Ok, we have been silent on the forum about the development on CatGenius, but we haven't been sitting on our hands, so it's time for an update:

Lots of beta testers have signed up and have been contributing to a better box. Thanks a lot for all of your help, guys!

We are working together using a google group (http://groups.google.com/group/catgenius). In the discussion area we discus test results, new features and solve problems individual people may have. In the pages area we are creating a knowledge base on the box' inner workings. The group is still private now, but we are discussing to open it up so everybody can read along.

The summer slowed us down a bit, but the 3rd release came out last week and I expect it's just a matter of weeks before the first full release is ready. For now it's still a nerd-only solution, but we hope we will be able to get it ready for end-users soon. So keep your eyes to this thread for more news!

So, it doesn't look like this question has been asked or answered anywhere. My biggest complaint about the 120 is the 10-hour sleep mode. Does this firmware disable that?

This sounds like a great way to deal with our first CG120 which we can't find our receipt for warranty work. Our second is new and unmodified. I'm a technical user willing to flash firmware and do soldering. I'll be watching the google group to. Thanks for all the effort. Has there been any thoughts on the usage/replacements of the "4 Use Maintenance Cartridges" PN now sells and shipped with our new CG120.

I'm sorry for this late response: I'm working really hard on the software and even though I read this forum almost on a daily basis before, I now don't log in that often anymore. Most people involved signed up for beta testing, so they know what's going on.
I've been somewhat of an "avid reader" of this CatGenie forum for some time, and I'm REALLY (really, really, really, really, really, really) looking forward to learning when your firmware will go live so that I can even actually order a CatGenie 120 for my two pals.
I'm glad to hear that. I seems that most people are just waiting silently, unfortunately ;-)
My goals are to use a certifiably non-toxic sanitizing solution in a refillable cartridge and to use 0.12g 6mm BBs, so this firmware seems to be the answer to the refillable cartridge dilemma that was born with the 120 (especially following your second video evidencing cartridge bypass - does your programming still query the CG to deploy solution?).
I've been looking at laboratory glass beads, usually used to smoothen the bubbles in a boiling liquid. They sink, are available in 3mm balls and they are smooth, so they won't pick up any dirt. Don't use BBs; They're too big, like the LitterFree pellets. See also: catgenie/topic3371.html
CatGenius does deploy cleaning solution, but for now it does not support the original RFID tag as I do not yet know the meaning of all data fields in it.

Thanks for the response and the tips for 3mm glass beads! I'll try to find an economical price point for those beads since they seem to run about $25/lbs, and would seem to me to be denser than the PVC litter that is peddled for the CG.

How many pounds do you think a CG should take without danger of becoming too heavy and wearing down the internals? Because I think that cats would be more accustomed to "piddling" around in 3-4 lbs of litter.

Regarding the cleaning solution, it seems to be the consensus that no one understands all the fields in the RFID tags, but referencing some of the home-brew CG60 solution setups that we've seen, that seems to be the way that everyone wants to go (which doesn't seem to be all that bad). So if your firmware altogether ignores the RFID tags in the cartridges, then users (like me in the future) will be able to self-monitor and refill the cartridges with cleaners like Simple Green. That's ultimately what I'm hoping for since the majority of the expense in owning a CG seems to arise with the cost of the solution (especially if we want to eventually run it at cleaning after every visit).

Thanks again and please keep up all the hard work - we're rooting for ya!

CatGenius replacement firmware coming soon: It's Open Source

Postby CatGenius » Thu Oct 06, 2011 12:41 pm

For everybody interested into tinkering with the software in their CatGenie, CatGenius has gone Open Source now!

Anybody can now access my repository containing the full source code of the software, but also photos, diagrams, measurement data and other documentation I have gathered over the past 2 years. Have fun! (but at your own risk)

Hello brand new to this, very interested in Cartridge/Cat Genius. I do not yet own a CG would first like to get an idea on how the Cat Genius program is sitting. Would I be able to just download this firmware and zap the CG's brain fairly easy or what would that all entail, and would there be instructions with this firmware program to explain the features it is capable of doing? Then for the Cartridge Genie wondering what cost and shipping generally come out to. This would be going to Minnesota.

Thanks,

TK5

I don't care if it's geeky! Can we get a "how-to" on uploading it? I've reprogrammed this thing millions of times for the sleep cycle and it STILL comes on at 1 am! I'm back to unplugging it at night and back in, in the morning. If I have to go through another 1 am cycle I'm going to use it for target practice!
