Needle ports

Postby justinharlow » Sat Feb 20, 2010 4:07 pm

I have 13 Genies running and have been refilling cartridges for a couple of years. The silicone needle ports on my 40-odd cartridges are wearing out so they all leak, and I am searching for a source of these little gizmos. I have advertised on eBay, Freecycle, Craig's List, etc for empty cartridges, but have never gotten any from anyone. Does anyone know where to get these things? I can't believe that Petnovations had these things custom-designed for Genie cartridges; they must be some kind of standard part, but I can't find them anywhere on any of the medical or lab supply sites.

If anyone knows where to get these, or would just like to get rid of a pile of empty cartridges, please post a reply or email me.

Thanks

Just find some cork and use that... ;)

Of course...you could just bypass the cartridge as a dispenser and put in straight tubing fer a bulk dispenser eliminating the needle. Just slip in a cut up cartridge with just the chip fer the count... :D

It's possible that this is a custom molding, but since the cartridges seem to be made in Israel, it may simply be that it's a "standard" part over there, but not here.

This may or may not help but we have a product where I work called a port saver. It is made by Baxa and is used pretty much to prevent the exact problem you're having. Now, this might be of no help because it is something you'd have to use from the start, so your current cartridges might still be trash. Also, I'm pretty sure there are certain regulations on who can actually buy them (DEA number holders), so finding a source might be difficult.
The only other solution I can think of would be to replace the innards of the cart with a new empty IV bag. You'd have similar sourcing problems though.
Here is a link to the port saver:

Good luck!

Since yer Cat Genie is probably out of warranty by now, you should go with a bulk solution setup.

You need to remove the needle port and extend the poly tubing from the pump to a bulk bottle/container. Yes...that means you'll have to open up the processing unit... ;) You'll have to gut the cartridge so it's slotted to allow fer the hose to slip through...that way you only have to reset the chip and not worry about refilling. :D

You have to remember that the cartridge/chip setup was created allow fer the company to sell the user cartridges. If you modify/remove most of that setup, you don't have to worry about the nipple/plug deteriorating. :D

Here's another approach...collect as many used up cartridges (60 or 120) as you can find...cause I'm gonna venture to say the new ones use the same nipple plug. So you should be able to use those in yer 60 cartridge. :D
