In the interest of full disclosure... shouldn't you mention that you get a credit for supplies when someone uses that code?

Just an FYI, we created this program for people that came to us and said, "I show the CatGenie to everyone I know and tell them how great it is, is there a way I can get credit?" So we created Friends & Family to tell people we value their referrals.

Now many people are posting their codes on numerous BB's (that are already discussing the CatGenie and of course they are not telling them they are making anything, or contrary to the intent of the program, not even knowing these people. Additionally, they add their code to coupon sites that are primarily used by companies to promote their own discounts (also not telling people about their windfall). While, we are not stopping their codes yet, we are assessing whether they are “referring” people to the CatGenie or are they just capitalizing on existing buying interest created by others-primarily advertising.

I think the worst part is not one person doing this says anything about the CatGenie-just save $30. So we do not even get the benefit of happy customers telling everyone how great it is, or a positive review posting anywhere with their discount or even better answering peoples questions and helping to make a sale while giving out your code —now that would be more of a true referral.

We created this for you because you asked for it, now people are turning this into a business but not really referring people and that just may kill this program.

Just suspend the abusers. You know the codes. Disable them when they are posted to forums. Easy breezy.

Another option is to just lower the price of the product or provide central coupon codes. If people are abusing the program, kill it. I wish I could say I have pity for your company, but don't provide a service you cannot afford. The end-game is you get more customers. So either regulate or get over it and sell as many catgenies as you can.

I like your product, but the money grubbing is leaving a bad odor in the litterbox.

As a company we feel obligated to our customers, and want them to be aware as much as we can about what we are doing. And that is why I felt it was important to voice our concerns and since this topic seemed perfect, I posted before we make any changes to a system that we love and our customers love.

While I do not want to get into an argument with you, and you are entitled to your opinion, the only point that I will take issue with is your reference to "money grubbing". It costs more than you think to create, test, build, market and support a product like the CatGenie. Changing peoples habits is not easy or cheap. As we grow we will reduce expenses, and when we do, we will pass it on to the customer--It is good business sense.

Thanks for your comments. I think the program is a nice thing, but my grief is I think the easiest thing to suspend abuse is to disable posted codes. You're essentially saying, "Whoa guys, you're costing us too much money by doing this." But meanwhile, you are otherwise selling a few more systems that might not otherwise have sold. I personally don't care if they get a kickback for sharing the code because its a few more bucks in my pocket but it sounds like your company does.

I mean you're either happy about it or you're not. It doesn't sound like CG is happy about the above users, so the best thing to do is suspend the code and PM them and let them know they've been suspended and are not usable. If you're sending them too much free product, then plug the hole in the system or put a cap on the amount they can get.

I think we can simply agree to disagree and leave it at that. Thanks kindly for participating in the forums. I definitely appreciate that CG has its ear to the ground and is involving itself so actively with its end users.

hmmmm... interesting.

Posting codes by individuals for their own gain, is cousin to the hacking of cartridges. Yeah, let's reduce profits and put Catgenie out of business. That should satisfy all the complainers of granules and cartridge costs.

Actually I feel the hacking of cartridges is good for business. If people are willing to take the time to hack and make something easier or better, that means the business model is working and people like the product. If options become available more people will buy it. Maybe you will even see accessories etc, new impellers, scoops etc as peoples needs and wants change.

Think about iRobot and the Scooba. Great idea, but without people being able to use the cleaner of their choice the product would have failed. Would you buy a washing machine that only worked with Tide, or Oxyclean? I think not.

Secondly with the economy in the state it is in, any revenue for a 400$ litter box company should be deemed as good. People are cutting back, and hacking cartridges etc is a step towards making it easier to afford for the average consumer. Of course most people who are paying $400 for a litter box are probably not scraping for food yet..... but some are.

As for the codes.... Well in this day and age, sign up a friend types of marketing are really limited to box based business. With the internet being what it is no code or topic or person is left untouched.

""Henry Ford"" <---------- People want options, no matter what your selling proprietary add on's throughout history have been the downfall of many a great idea, and the inspiration for many a competitor.

Saving 30 dollars is really great to Cat Genie Online. The automatic litterbox is really interesting so purchasing it with the coupon code is better. Getting a big discount is really a help to purchase some other items too.
