I have the same problem with one of my cats. She refuses to pee in the Catgenie. She will poo in it, but no matter how tantalizing I try to make it, she WILL NOT PEE IN IT! ((shaking my fist in the air!!)) She will either pee on the floor directly in front of it, or at the bottom of the basement stairs. My other cats adapted fine, no problem.
Very frustrating indeed.
What I have done so far...
I followed all of the Acclimation instructions provided with the Catgenie...no success.
I did the plastic bag in the bottom, regular litter...slowly adding more granules until 100% granules in the bowl. This SEEMED to work, but unbeknownst to me, she had found a spot to pee that I wasn't aware of, under the stairs in our storage area. I got that all cleaned up and blocked access.
I tried the Feliway plug ins. This seemed to calm everyone, but no success getting her acclimated to the Catgenie.
I got 'Nokout' odour neutralizer to rid the house of any 'trigger' spots to prevent further peeing. The product works, absolutely! But she still wants to pee outside of the Catgenie.
I purchased 'Dr Etsy's Cat Attract' herbs. Not the litter, but the actual herbs. I sprinkle the herbs in with the granules in hopes it will charm her into the Catgenie. All the cats like the smell of the herbs, but I can't say it works definitively as the one cat still will not pee in the Catgenie. And yes, the herbs need to be replenished each time the Catgenie does a cleaning cycle.
I took her to the vet to be sure there were no health issues causing the behavior....she got a clean bill of health.
I have used deterrents to make her usual spots as unappealing as possible, but she just finds a new place, close by, to pee. I even purchased puppy training pads for her, which she will pee on, thankfully, but they aren't cheap, and it doesn't solve the problem.
I have spent a considerable amount of time and money 'CSI'ing' this problem but am getting close to giving up. All I can figure is she does not like the feel of the granules, or the possible 'splash back' she gets when peeing on them.
My next plan of attack is to try less granules in the Catgenie as others have tried with success. If that does not work, I am looking into getting some rounded poly pellets in hopes that it will feel better on her feet/paws. I worry about using any other medium than the Catgenie granules, but at this point, why not?
If anybody has any other suggestions, I will happily take them under consideration. I REALLY want this to work.
ARGH!!
