I think that some granuales (litter) up around the top edge of the bowl is normal.

Mine does fling litter when the rake does its dumping action. For the time being I just put one ofe the big peices of cardboard from the original crate by the side that the rake flings it at and vacuum the extra flung litter then dumpt the vacuumed litter back into the catgenie. Not an ideal solutiion but i works.
