The CatGenie "Smart Chip" cartridge - your opinion

The CatGenie is the only self-cleaning box on the market. An evolution of the LitterFree design, it connects to your household plumbing.

What is your stance on the CatGenie "Smart Chip" cleaning solution cartridges?

I don't care and don't really see it as an issue

I know this is a blatant plug, but I like my reset device better. Plus the new version also READs the cycle count of a cartridge!

You don't have to believe me, read what my customers are saying on my site.

Yeah, but gameparts' device also includes hemostats, a funnel for refilling and a list of cleaning solutions. Are you willing to match this offer?

I suppose I could, but is that really necessary? You can probably pick up a funnel at your grocery store for a dollar. I found the hemostats for $2 online, but I don't think they are necessary, because I can pull out the plug with my fingers. So are you saying you would rather buy mine, but this is the only thing stopping you?

I guess you are right that the funnel costs only a dollar and that you can buy hemostats for 2 bucks a piece. And I suppose you're also right about being able to pull out the plug with your fingers. However as with any product, none of this matters to the consumer who's shopping around for the best deal with the least hassle.

Yeah, I guess I have to agree with your analogy being a possibility. So, you didn't answer my question, would you buy one if I included those items?

How did you come to the conclusion that I was in the market? Perhaps I was just making an observation ;)

I see, so you just like to play devils' advocate! I was as asking your opinion, and you still haven't given it up. :)

God help you if you get a bad chip. I've got one cartridge that doesn't read right. It sometimes signals the system to put fluid in the during the wash cycle, other times it runs the hopper dry.

When the Cat Genie dies, I'm looking for something else. I can't take the litter. It's everywhere. Even in my bed.

I'll go back to the scoop and a little garbage pail.

Sounds like you need to call CatGenie, is yours still under warranty, I'm sure they will help with that. As far as the litter getting everywhere, YEAH! I had the same problem until I got one of those catch mats and put it around the litter box. Now it's a lot better.

Yes, I am the poster AND the "someone". Sorry for the misleading wording. I wanted to go back and fix this, but the post is now locked. Even so, I have many happy customers who have purchased my reset device and love it! I personally think it is the best one out there.

The cartridge doesn't control the water into the bowl, so it cannot "run the hopper dry". You have another issue, probably a dirty water sensor. Plenty of posts covering that topic. Easy to fix. As for granules "everywhere" remember the old style litter dust is "everywhere" as well but isn't as obvious 'cause it's dust.

I recall reading this thread before the posts were removed.

I guess Cat Genie objected to their proprietary 16 bytes of numbers being reprinted in violation of copyright.

Seems a bit petty, but given that they are contributing useful info to the forum I don't feel awful about it...

I would like to reprogram my cat genie, I would like to custom tune the cleaning cycle... Create my own frankenstein monster... I prtomis to continue to buy cat genies, and to say good things about them... But it would be nice to allow us to innovate and share... 99% of the people out there will simply ignore us and continue to buy cat genies, and if we come up with some grand new innovation, cat genie can learn from our public postings and incorporate what we learn into making the product better.
Trying to shut the hardware hackers down by supressing their posts is a waste of everyone's time and free-speech rights.

On the instructable page I noticed a lot of comments deleted from contributing hackers... geat! It's worth mentioning that these people purchased cat genies, and are like to purchase new ones in the future... Unless someone pisses them off...

As for the hacking... The cg has those diagnostic modes available from the buttons... Seems to me that one could program extra steps to the cleaning process by using that interface. Tap into the backside of the switches, and wire in your micro controller to do your bidding.
