Catseat success?

Postby gng » Sat Jul 19, 2003 7:19 am

Hello all,

Has anyone tried the Catseat toilet-training litter box? (http://www.catseat.com)

We recently switched from a Littermaid and got a Catseat installed for our two mixed Russian Blue kittens, and was wondering how long it has taken others to get their cats toilet-trained.

thx, gng

catseat

Postby Pippi » Sun Nov 16, 2003 2:42 pm

I am very eager to hear any stories about the success or failure of the Catseat...we are looking into getting one ... how long does the process take? Is it usually successful for all cats, regardless of their varying temperaments?

Received the Catseat

Postby Aretha » Tue May 02, 2006 4:23 pm

yesterday evening I came home and saw the catseat had arrived. I opened it and of course my cats were jumping in and out of the box it came in.

Befor the arrival of the catseat I'd started the training process by slowly moving the litter box a little closer to the bathroom each day. Currently the catseat is located right outside the bathroom door. My older cat (almost 3) used it within an hour or so of setup. He took a piss. Problem was, he put all four feet in the sand and pissed on the seat (which then dribbled into the litter). I will have to keep more of an eye on the cats if I hear them using it, maybe guiding their legs onto the toilet seat instead of having them stand in the litter. I have not seen my smaller cat use it yet but when I woke up this morning there was poop in the litter and a TON of litter kicked out all over the hallway. Ah well... hopefully this will be the end of litter everywhere as I gradually reduce the amount of litter in the seat

I HOPE
I HOPE
I HOPE this works!

will continue to give updates

week 1

Postby Aretha » Thu May 04, 2006 8:30 pm

well the cats both seem to be using the catseat. it is on the floor still, just outside the bathroom.

my male cat enjoys raking all of the crystals from the pan onto my hallway floor, and then meowing LOUDLY at me until he finally gives up and winds up using the catseat. I had no idea a cat could hold so much shit in. He had all 4 feet in the crystals at first, but I slowly approached just as he started defecating and moved his front paws out of the sand and onto the seat... and he's been doing it like that since. My female cat puts 3 paws on the seat, one paw in the sand. They're getting closer.

Tonight I am going to move the catseat into the bathroom. Not on the toilet yet. I want them using it like a champ for at least a week before I attempt to mount the thing. I can't wait to never sweep up another grain of litter.

I am going as slowly as I can but I really hope this process only takes a couple of weeks. The catseat is designed to make the transition as quick as possible.

Progress Today

Postby Aretha » Sun May 07, 2006 12:20 am

I have these 2 cats, and it has taken me only 5 full DAYS to do most of the training. Just today I mounted the Catseat on my toilet. I brought kitty into the bathroom after installing the seat. I placed him on it and then I fed him a treat while he stood on it. Then he kinda circled on the seat, smelled the litter in the tray in the center of the seat, and then hopped off.

I then brought lotus into the bathroom to do the same routine. She was a little more hesitant to jump up ON the seat for the snack but she eventually did and then ate the treat.. sniffed around a bit... and then hopped off.

Just a few hours ago I found a MASSIVE shit from kitty right smack dab in the middle of the catseat, on top of the crystals, and the black fins are fully extended!!!! GOOD KITTY!

I am just hoping lotus follows suit. She has been doing really well so I suspect she'll be leaving me something soon.

The way things are going I will have my cats toilet trained in 10 days.

Amazing.
In the center of the cat seat I am now using the black tray which includes an opening, and two smaller black trays to fill with crystal litter. The idea is that you can slowly make space between the two movable boxes to introduce the cat to the water below. Along with the fresh litter I also include just a sprinkle of their old crystals to remind them that this is indeed where they're expected to piss.

combining training methods

Postby Aretha » Tue May 16, 2006 5:34 pm

ok so in my last report things were going great! The cats were jumping up and using the catseat. The black tray with the smaller litter tray inserts was in use. I went from 2 small litter trays to just one of them, so that my cats would aim for the crystals they are so used to, but the poop and pee would sometimes fall into the water that was available on either side of the tray.

I should mention that we have been mostly successful using the mounted catseat with just one of the teeny litter boxes there. There was only one setback a few days ago when I found that lotus had used my umbrella in the KITCHEN to poop on. GROSS! Luckily that has been the only non-bathroom related mishap we've had in the process and she's back to using the catseat. Each night I bring her to the catseat and remind her that that's where she poops. So far so good.

I have to say, there are things I like about the catseat. Those things are:
1) cat gets used to using a toilet shaped seat while it's on the ground
2) it mounts onto the toilet so they continue using something they
re familiar with
3) the textured black fins make them more comfortable and help them know just where to aim

The things I do not like so much about the catseat:
1)it is not very comfortable for human use. It is a flat seat. Most toilet seats have a downward slant toward the bowl which pulls your asscheeks apart a bit and makes pooping easier. This seat is uncomfortable and gets dirty (the cats have very little litter to use and tend to touch their own waste while digging and then they circle the bowl, so it needs to be wiped down before each use). If you have more than one toilet in the house this isn't so bad. We only have one toilet. My roommates and I (all female) prefer to sit on the porcelain! (seat up!) to pee and poop. It's cold and it's uncomfortable but it's still more clean and comfortable than using the surface of the catseat for human use. Additionally, it mounts loosely on our toilet so it feels like we're rocking around on the seat when we use it.
2) The textured black flaps. I can't really speak for my cats, but I don't think they're fooled into thinking that by touching the flaps they're scraping litter. It's a good idea but in reality I don't think they're falling for that. It's good that they're there, though... as they slowly introduce the cats to the water below and help with aiming as I mentioned earlier.
3)The catseat confuses people. It isn't confusing to me, but I have to basically write out an instruction manual for guests who use the bathroom. I have not been having many guests as a result during this time of training. But that's ok with me.

I have decided to integrate methods of toilet training. I still have the catseat mounted, and today I removed the black trays and the holder of the little trays all together so all that's left is the seat and the retractable black flaps. I went to the hardware store and bought a stainless steel mixing bowl that fit perfectly inside my toilet (under the catseat, resting on the porcelain). I have put just a little bit of litter in it and the cats are already comfortable using it. It's easier for guests and my roommates to remove in order to use the bathroom. The flaps are fully extended so the kittys see littler, but it's deeper in the toilet so they're getting used to their pee and poo falling deeper.

I am going to let them continue to get used to the stainless steel bowl
I am going to continue to slowly retract the flaps so they get used to using the toilet without the flaps.
I am going to gradually reduce the amount of crystals I use in the stainless steel bowl and then once I'm down to none I'm going to try filling the bowl up gradually with water. I might even try putting some blue aquarium gravel in the bowl of water to fool the cats into thinking that their litter is still down there.
Once the cats are getting used to the reduced litter and the increased water, I am going to switch back over to the regular toilet seat so they get used to balancing on it.

Once the cats are comfortable pooping in the water in the stainless steel bowl, I am going to remove the bowl all together and they will be toilet trained!!

My friend said it took a year to train her cat. It has been 3 weeks with the catseat, and my cats are 95% trained. She said she's very impressed with how quickly they're training, and that a contraption like the cat seat would've likely helped her cat train a lot.

One good thing about the stainless steel bowl is that they won't be kicking any more litter all over the bathroom floor because they only have so much access to it, as it is deeper in the toilet than the provided trays the catseat has.

I predict that I will be back on my normal toilet seat in a week, and hopefully the cats will be fully trained in 2-3 more weeks. That means two cats trained in less than 2 months.
TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!

Thank you catseat. And thank you http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html[/url]

update

Postby Aretha » Tue May 23, 2006 2:46 pm

I have started to integrate methods of cat training.

I found a stainless steel cooking bowl that fits perfectly in my toilet and under the seat. Last night I replaced the catseat with our regular toilet seat (SO MUCH BETTER) and so far I've cleaned piss 3 times. I am at the stage where I am using very little crystals (maybe 2 tablespoonsful)... and so if, say, kitty takes a big piss and then lotus wants to poop and I haven't gotten to cleaning it yet, she will poop in the shower. Gross. I feel that I am quite close to completing this process. A couple weeks before the stainless steel is gone completely is what I'm hoping for.

You really do need to have willing roommates to do this kind of thing. You also need to be SURE to have someone around and willing to help pretty much around the clock so that there are no accidents. cats like a clean patch of litter, not a bowl of pissy crystals.

TOTALLY WORTH IT STILL!!!!!

using a stainless steel bowl only.

today kitty pooped right in the bowl with absolutly no litter in it! good boy! Now I'm hoping lotus will follow suit. I get so excited with each step forwards.

It's great that kitty learned to go in a certain spot even without the litter there. SOoooooo close

must get them up to speed. I may be done in as soon as a week

making my cat training process take 5 weeks total for 2 cats.

Congrats! SOunds like its going good. Be careful, especially now that you are so close, do not rush them or it could result in 3 steps backwards! Being so close, there is that tendency to try to hurry things forward. Trust me, it will only mess things up. You've brought them a long way in a short amount of time, so keep up your patience. This step that they are in, could last a while. Its a LOT different having that bowl there than it is without it. Hopefully they will transition smoothly-just don't rush em.

and thanks for the updates!

I GIVE UP! (for now)

Postby Aretha » Sun Jun 04, 2006 9:29 pm

I just cleaned up a HUGE poop and piss in the tub. They simply have not been taking well to the removal of the stainless steel bowl. I have been cleaning up poop out of the bath and around the toilet floor for days and weeks on end. I can't do it anymore. Maybe if it were just my apartment and I wasn't sharing it with other people to whom I'm trying to be considerate....

I'll try again someday, I'm sure they'd be able to quickly get back to the step I left them at... but as soon as I opened the litterbox back up BOTH cats pooped and peed within a minute. They $%&#( love the litterbox. I just don't have the time to devote to this stage of the training anymore. I wish I did but I need to move on with my LIFE!!! DAMNIT I was so close!

I will try again someday, but for now, it's litterbox. plain and dirty.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. It is incredibly difficult and a huge test of patience to successfully train a cat to use the toilet. It is most unnatural for them. I think along with the patience required of the owner, success depends on the cat. Cats do not like change of any sort and will do what they want. They don't give one crap that it would make our lives easier if they modified their toilet habits! It's all about them. All of the time. Most cats will not adapt to the toilet and the few that do, often times will just do it on their own, like my cat did. I never tried to train him on the toilet, he just hopped up there one day and peed! I was dumbfounded. He won;t poop there, but he pees in the toilet all of the time. If you are thinking "boy, she's lucky!" let me squash that right now. He sprays. He is a troublemaker and is the biggest pain in the butt cat that walks this earth. But, yes, he pees in the toilet. let me tell you a little story about what a brat this cat is....

My little sister has the worlds most annoying laugh. She kind of screeches. IT is really horrible. She was visiting me a couple of years ago and was carrying on and being loud and doing that laugh of hers.

Milo was laying on the floor taking it all in. Everytime she laughed, he would yank his head around and scowl at her. You could see the annoyance in his face. It was pretty funny actually.

Well the evening wore on, she kept laughing, and Milo was getting more annoyed by the minute. Finally he had enough. He got up and casually walked towards her. She semi freaked out. She said "is he going to bite me?" I told her, no, he is probably just annoyed at your stupid laugh.

He hopped up onto the ottoman in front of the chair she was sitting at. He purse was also on the ottoman. Milo gave my sis one last look, turned around and peed in her purse! Ithought I was going to choke, I was laughing so hard. She, on the other hand, saw no humor in the situation.

So, having a cat that is smart enough and gutsy enough to pee in the toilet also means that he is smart enough and gutsy enough to do OTHER things that just aren't acceptable. This is just one of about a million examples of the reign of Milo.

If your cat uses the litterbox, just be glad, cause it could have been your purse!

Apparently my nephew "trained" his kitty to go without the use of a special seat. According to my mother, his kitty just kept following him into the bathroom and proceeded to do as "daddy did", Since my mother is older, and well I'll be the first to admit, not all "there", I just laughed and said "mom, I think Alex is full of sh!t" THen she said she witnessed it for herself and so did my sister, well I changed my mind. And bless his little kitty heart he flushes after he goes  So I'm serisously comtemplating having my nephew coming for an extended visit to teach my three.

One of the cats I had when I was growing up learned how to use the toilet on his own. My mom used to always yell at us kids for not flushing the toilet. One day she saw the cat on the toilet doing his thing! He only used it for pee though, he still pooped in the litterbox.
