Toilet training

Postby potty-trained hopeful » Mon Dec 13, 2004 11:35 pm

I have read and read about this subject, looked at websites, etc.

My cat is 6 and has never had an accident, except 2 separate times when someone closed the door to the room the box was in, and I wasn't home for a while. I want to get a littermaid on ebay, but I keep thinking I should try toilet training first.

This is just an idea, but wow would it be great if a kennel or other pet-care facility could pull it off. I would love to be able to take my cat somewhere and pay someone to train them. Only problem is, the cat would be upset about not being home, and it can't be done in a week!

PS: I have heard that cats have been trained to flush if a toy is tied to the toilet handle that they can grab in their paws and pull down on.

It would never work to take your cat somewhere to be trained. Sorry to dash your hopes on that one. It takes quite a while and TONS of paitence to get the cat to use the toilet. Let me repeat: TONS of patience. It's almost like taking 2 steps forward then one step backwards. And it only works if your cat wants to use the toilet. Cats do exactly as they please. The're not concerned about what you want. It's all about them, I'm afraid.

And you certainly do NOT want your cat to learn to flush! Especially if you have metered water! Cats can obsess on things and a bowl full of swirling water is fascinating. Let's watch that again. And again. And again.

The best time for them to learn is kittenhood. The earlier training begins the better the results, keeping in mind, it's up to them.

Below is a picture of Lucy when she was a baby. Lol! look at her tail! SHe is really concentrating. lol Notice the 2 litter boxed on the side of the toilet. You start with one on the floor and very gradually raise the height until it is about the height of the toilet. She is sitting on one of those cheap pieces of crap training seats from petsmart. It was wobbly even for her size. That is bad. Any unstability will turn the cat off. I eventually replaced it with a stainless steel bowl that I placed under the seat. IT was held in place by the toilet seat. Litter went into the bowl. I hated that because it was such a stinky mess and made me gag when I cleaned it (which has to be OFTEN). Then one day out of the blue, Lucy and her twin, Ruby, just decided they could use any of the 3 bathrooms in the house and I got rid of all of the stuff in 'their' bathroom.

Be warned: any type of disruption to the cats life can cause a setback. ANY kind of disruption. New bf/gf, new cat, moving furniture, change in your schedule, and god forbid, you move to a new house, all of these can cause a kitty to stress. And every cat owner knows when kitty is stressed, kitty pees anywhere!

Oh, one more thing, both girls insist I watch them when I am home. I think they hold it til I get there. :)
