i see at petco kits to teach a cat to use the toilet like a human=has anyone ever tried this with their cat and succeeded?

I bought a kit off of Ebay and tried it with my cat, and I finnally got his 20lb butt 
up there to use it, but once you tear out the middle and there is no more litter he would not get up there. So it was a waste for me.
