Petco changed their litter, what to use now?

Postby jeff » Mon Apr 26, 2010 9:15 am

I've been using Petco's bulk clumping litter for a very long time. It has always met my criteria of being scent-free (very important), good at clumping, fairly priced (when on sale), and dust-free.

The last few batches I've bought have contained incredible amounts of dust. I can't buy this stuff anymore.

The litter at Costco is scented. Are there any grocery store brands I should consider?

That is what I use too. The last time I bought litter, I bought it at a new pet store down the street from me. Normally that is a dumb place to buy litter - too high - but this place has wonderful prices. I will go down there and find out what I bought and let you know. I got 4 big huge bags and it was cheaper than petco. It is coarser than petco, but my cats don't care. I don't remember it being overly dusty. I wonder if my petco changed theirs too. When I buy from there I take 4 of the buckets to fill. That is a lot of fun to lug back to the litter area. Good thing I have my trusty Radio Flyer Wagon! I drag that silly thing with me all over the place.

I'll find out what brand I have and get back to you Jeff.

The last time I bought Petco litter, I refilled 10 buckets. People look at me like I'm crazy and/or have a dozen cats, but it was on sale and I never have any other reason to go to Petco. The car sure feels different with 300lbs of litter in the trunk.

I'm tempted to try the scoopfree again. Last time I used it I had three cats. I think it might work better with two.

I gave up on it, just like the others. I still have a genie in the garage that gets used daily by one or more of the cats. I dont really know exactly who uses it but I suspect it is Ruby and Stormy. They all go out and use the regular boxes that are on the patio in the 'outside room' I made just for that reason. Well, that and so that they could experience some outside air and watch the squirrels tease them. Those pesky squirrels come right up to the cats aea and eat their nuts in front of the cats. Poor kitties, just sit there and shake, they want to get them so bad.

Lol I know what you mean about the car being lighter. I really have 6 buckets that I fill, I lied. It takes 2 shopping carts with 3 buckets each to haul them to the car. I am usually so tired after lifting them up and out of the cart into the car, that when I get home I leave them in the car. They sit in there for a few days sometimes. People at petco think I have dozens of cats.

Finally I am getting back to you on this. The stuff I am using is Precious Cat Litter by the same guy that makes the Cat Attract. Comes in 40 lb bags. Red or blue, scoooping and multi cat. I pay almost 13 for 40 lbs.

last week I took my trusty red wagon and walked 4 blocks to the new Incredible Pets that just opened. Love love the place! I loaded up with 3 bags of litter and a bunch of cat food. OMG I wasnt thinking straight when I kept piling bags into my wagon. I had to stop and almost pass out on the way home! That sucker had 150 lbs of stuff in it. I wanted to chew my poor arm off by the time I finally got home. My wagon has some serious wheels on it and looks like it could be a 4 wheel drive wagon. Not with me as the engine tho. I thougth about unloading one of the bags along the way and coming back for it, but just trudged onward.
