Pearls Safe?

Postby sage » Sun Nov 23, 2003 2:54 am

Hi Alan, I tried them a while back and my female cat ate them. It wasn't just once in a while, it was a lot. After talking to several companys and my vet, I changed litter. This was my only complaint. I recently saw something at PetSmart that was similiar, but a much lighter texture, like styro foam. I don't know about that one. I recently switched to the WBCL after reading about it here, and am happy with it. Sage

My cats have used crystals off and on for several years. In fact I switched them to crystals last spring before our move and they used them until I got the Litter Robot a few weeks ago. Crystals are great! I think they are cleaner than clumping litter unless you have the Litter Robot. I have found that some don't have much dust, while others have a lot. I try to avoid dust as much as possible. I may be putting crystals in my robot soon. With six cats, I keep forgetting to empty the waste drawer daily and it can get pretty messy. As long as your cat doesn't eat the crystals you should be fine. They are expensive, but cleaner.

I think crystals rock just cause the litter remains cleaner and I don't have to scoop as much. Cutting down on the number of times I have to scoop is a HUGE plus. Not only that, but tracking seems to be greatly reduced because of it's shape and weight. I've used clumping litters before and will never go back.

I don't know for sure, but since all crystal litters are just silica (i.e., sand), I imagine ingesting small quantities would be okay for a cat. Also, although you might notice dust if you pour a bag out into a box (again, it's sand, so probably not too healthy to inhale), it doesn't produce dust when the cat digs in it. All in all, I think crystal litters were a huge step forward. Too bad some cats don't like them.

The Ultra Pearl's site (http://www.ultrapet.com/ultrapearls/ultrapearls.html) says:
Ultra Pearls are 100% safe and 100% chemically and biologically inert. They are completely non-toxic and safe for pets and people - even if consumed! It is fine to put in landfills and will degrade back to sand over time in your garden. This is the only FDA approved silica in the world.

I used this litter when I had my Scoop Free and liked it a lot. It was about $8 with a Kroger's card and filled the box up perfectly with one bag. You still got dust in the face when you poored out the bag, but I just ended up holding my breath and turning my head while filling the box.

Check out my post "THE REAL 'SCOOP' ON CRYSTALS" in this forum (LITTER.) I have used them for ten years and love them.

I found them toxic for my cats. I started to use the Crystals and then my first boy, Boris, decided to pee in the bathroom sink infront of me and I noticed blood in his urine. I took him to the vet and they extracted urine from his kidneys and found crystals in his urine. I stopped using the crystals immediately and never had a problem again. I could only assume that they were licking it off of their paws and their systems could not handle it. Just my experience and my own conclusions.
