The Real "Scoop" on Crystals and What Scoop Free Didn't Do!

If you’re getting rid of Scoop Free, don’t through the baby out with the bathwater. It isn’t the fault of the crystals; it’s the fault of Scoop Free for being so cheap with their product.

If you read directions on any crystals package, you’ll find it say use at least three to four inches depth. Scoop Free’s whole cartridge isn’t that deep! There’s so little litter in the Scoop Free system that I’m amazed we can get even a week out of it! In order to make crystals work, you've got to use lots of them.

I’ve been using crystals with absolutely no odor for over ten years. Here’s the real “scoop” on using them.

First, you fill you litter box with crystals to a depth of 4-6 inches. The more the better. Scoop the poop daily but DO NOT STIR the whole box, just the top layer when you are scooping the poop!

Yes, I know the above is heresy, but here’s why:

As almost everyone knows by now, that the crystals absorb the urine and lock in the odor. Yes, really they do. So let the used one stay on the bottom. As they become “full”, the ones above will take on the job. And so on until everything and inch or two below the top is yellow. When you begin turning over lots of yellow crystals when you scoop, it’s time to change the litter. I usually got about three weeks with two adult cats using the box. One was a sixteen pound male, so there was lots of pee.

I’m not a rocket scientist, and I discovered this secret by accident. I simply didn’t like the looks of the yellow crystals I was turning up when I stirred the whole box. So I didn’t stir. Dumb, but true. I found that NOT stirring made no difference at all, and the yellow crystals never made it to the top to get tracked out into the world at large. And when I discovered Litter Locker, even scooping got easier.

I lived in a small retirement condo, 1200 square feet max, and no one entering the condo ever knew we had cats until they saw them. Some of the more honest ones would say "I didn't know you had cats because I didn't smell them!"

True story. Really. Try it. And let me know, please, if there is any automated system out there which will take crystals in this quantity.

Hmm, if scooping only the top works, seems like we could try a deeper DIY cartridge for the scoopfree. The rake would still push teh poo under the end flap, so i can't see why it wouldn't work.
