I've used my Litter Robot for a year (and loving it!) Prior to that I had those self sifting boxes. For those I tended to get the hard clumping brands, my favorites were any Arm & Hammer clumping litter, unscented worked for me, because as long as you had enough depth in the box, the hard clumps would come right out.
With the LR, it didn't seem to matter what clumping litter I bought, until a store brand (Tops Unscented) must have changed their formula, because I noticed odor for the first time. The clumps were very soft, and broke open during the tumbling action. Such is the screening action in the LR that it didn't happen until near the end, so most of it wound up in the drawer anyway, but dropping them into the drawer made them break open completely, and that's where the odors got released. The drawer contains it pretty well, but I was used to better control than that.
I went back to Arm & Hammer and got improved results right away, even with half the litter being the off brand. I could have dumped the whole thing and started fresh, but I wasn't feeling well that day and just hoped for the best, which happened. The old litter will get used up.
We don't have any pet warehouses near us, so I've tried all the common supermarket brands, and have decided to stick with Arm & Hammer unscented from now on. The scented kinds aren't necessary with my LR, and I can always sprinkle some actual baking soda on it if I feel it's necessary, which has always worked well for me in the past.
In general, my 2 cats don't seem to care what kind of litter I use, as long as it's clean when they go to the litter box.
