Anyone ever used Swheatscoop Litter?

Postby Tori » Thu Aug 14, 2003 5:53 pm

I was just wondering if anyone has used Swheatscoop litter before, and how they liked it. It's supposed to be safer for the cats? I've never tried it, but I'm considering testing it out, but I was curious of other peoples experiences they've had with it first.

I use the Omega Paw litterbox with Tidy Cats litter right now. It works pretty decent, and I don't really have much of a problem with it, but I've noticed Tidy Cats litter has a bit of a perfume scent that I don't particularly care for the smell of. So I'm looking for some alternate options. I've heard of Worlds Best Cat Litter also, but that's just a bit too pricey for me. So any feedback about Swheatscoop would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Another alternative

Postby cas » Thu Aug 14, 2003 9:53 pm

PetCo sells their own litter that is not scented and seems to work very well. I think it is called Gold Plus. It is clay, but it is less dusty and controls odors pretty well and is clumping for use with the Omega Paws.

We've used the corn, too, and like it pretty well (a.k.a. WBCL).

Hope that helps,

I have seen Gold Plus in Petco, but I've never tried it. Maybe I'll give it a try. Petco also sells WBCL, but they want $10.99 for a 7lb bag, which is a bit pricey in my opinion. Swheatscoop is $10.99 for a 14lb bag, which is more expensive compared to the $5 I pay for a 20lb bag of Tidy Cats, but I guess you get what you pay for. Maybe I'll give one of the expensive brands a try.

Thank you for your help! :)

Tori,

I have just recently tried SwheatScoop litter, and it is TERRIBLE!! I've never tried it in the conventional litter boxes, so it might work better in those, not sure. I used it in the litter robot, and it definitely is not compatible with it. It's VERY sticky litter - It stuck to the top, bottom and sides of the globe, and just made one big sticky mess that looked like oatmeal. Also, it clumps ALOT, which sounds like that would be good - but it clumped TOO much in my opinion. It made BIG HUGE clumps in the litter robot drawer, and if I didn't dump the drawer at least twice a day, it would become an even bigger mess. I wouldn't recommend using it if you have a litter robot, maybe it would work out better in a regular litter box.

I am on my first and last bag of SwheatScoop, and the end can't come soon enough. I am using it in a lift-and-sift litter box and it literally gums up the holes. I spend considerable time every day poking out the stuck litter so the litter box will work properly. I have not tried it in a regular litter box altho from the bottom of the L&S box, I already know it will stick and gum up.

I used swheat scoop for the first year of my cats life because every breeder I talked to said that clumping litters were horrible for kittens.

I don't know HOW I survived the entire year. Seriously.... or how I managed to keep friends who would visit me. The stuff reeked unless the entire box was changed every other day, it was gooey and difficult to clean, and once my cat was introduced to clumping litter on his first birthday- even HE refused to go anywhere near swheat scoop.

Not a huge fan here either

I bought it because it's wheat, doesn't have very much dust, and it's flushable. However, the clumping is a little bit weak and it tends to create stickiness everywhere. In the long run, you'd have to completely replace the entire litter more often than its worth since bits and pieces will form all over the place. Great price and all natural, but not great for us humans to clean up.

I tried it for ONE day and my cats said um no thanks mom. I finally used it to soak up spills in the garage.

I used it for a while when I only had 2 cats. I sprayed the box with Pam and that kept the clumps from sticking to the bottom and the sides. It worked ok, It wasn't the best out there but I put up with it because it is better for the environment and it controlled the odor satisfactorily.

After I added a third (and then a fourth) furry member to the family it was impossible to maintain the boxes. The stench was unbearable, even a day or two after cleaning the boxes and replacing the litter. I went back to clumping clay litters.

wheat litter

I have been using the swheat scoop litter in a regular litter box for a few weeks now and I like it. I'm not experiencing the stickiness or stink that everyone is talking about. I love that it's flushable and I don't have to haul out a ton of litter every week. I have 2 female cats under 10 lbs using 2 boxes that I scoop out once a day and there hasn't been a problem. I can see how it would be sticky in an automatic litter box since the clumps are hard on the outside but sticky on the inside and automatic boxes tend to break up the clumps. But I like the swheat scoop litter.

Tori -- You might try reading the customers' reviews of Swheat Scoop on Amazon.com. I did that last night trying to find a more natural litter for the LR. Was trying Odor Lockers and I was having a lot of sinus problems -- couldn't decide if it was Oregon weather being dry right now or a new litter that dries out everything including the inside of my nose!!

Anyway, the reviews on Amazon about the World's Best Cat Litter (WBCL) convinced me to give it a try (and its recommended by the L.R. manufacturer). I changed the litter about two hours ago and my nose feels better already. Both cats used it with no problems. It clumped well and did not stick to the LR during cycling which the Odor Lockers tended to do. Less dust (but still some).

I also saw a review (one of the last reviews) on Amazon by someone who owned one of the raking litter boxes and he/she highly recommended the WBCL because it did not stick to the rake -- said the litter box was working better than ever.

I used the swheat litter...once...and threw away the entire box after only a couple of days. I used it in a regular litter box (it would be a disaster in an automated box of any kind!) It is the stickiest and ickiest litter I have ever ever used. I was honestly looking for a cheaper option to world's best, but I quickly went back to world's best. The Swheatscoop was extremely hard to scoop as all the feces stuck to the bottom of the box, or the side as my cat is a side pee-er. Even when I had 3 inches of litter in the box, it was still sticky and icky. It didn't cover smell AT ALL.

There are completely safe options out there that are cheaper. Arm and Hammer now makes a natural litter that is mostly corn like world's best...but be careful, it kinda looks similar to swheat scoop. I have also seen the littermaid brand litter in target...and it is 100 percent corn like the world's best and is cheaper than world's best....now just because it is called littermaid, doesn't mean that it can only be used in a littermaid box!

I have used world's best for 3 years now and love it...yeah, it costs a little more, but it lasts a lot longer in the box, so the cost evens out in my opinion!

The Arm & Hammer brand is made from corn cobs like Nature's Miracle and works fine but it is perfumy... I happily went back to World's Best, today, after finding the regular grade for less that $5--- for 7 lbs at the local Fred Meyer store which amazed me because I have only found it at either pet stores or the local Grange Coop and around $10 to $11 at both.

I've used WBCL for years and tried every alternative litter that comes out. When I saw Swheat Scoop Multicat in the Petsmart, I had to try it. Honestly, all of the poor reviews had kept me form trying it before since I have Litter Robots. After adding several regular boxes to help with some behavioral problems, I decided to test it out. Love it! I like that it has no odor, the WBCL extra strength is lightly scented. The multicat Swheat Scoop clumps hard. I can definitely recommend it for use in a regular box.

We like to try every type of litter, too. I think we've tried Sweat, but the main think I remember is the smell of wet wheat. Do you notice that with the multi cat version?
