New Litter: Arm & Hammer "High Performance"

Postby tbhausen » Thu Jun 22, 2006 10:14 pm

Anybody try this yet?

http://www.armhammerpets.com/performance.aspx

I found it at a local grocery store. It's about $1/lb but much less dense than clay. I just put it in a sifter (Van Ness). It took just over 1.5 bags for a really full box. Fingers crossed that my female won't reject it. I like the idea of all natural and flushable. It has a bit of a perfumey smell but very similar to the A&H Super Scoop to my nose.

First 18hrs Report

Postby tbhausen » Fri Jun 23, 2006 10:12 am

My fussy female appears to have used the A&H HP litter right off the bat. No odors, very soft on the paws, and light (makes sifter easy to lift, but requires more shaking to sift). Doesn't seem to track much. Nicest part is, the clumps that adhere to the sides of the box do not make a pasty mess like clay litters do. I take the bottom (empty) pan out of the stack and put the sifted tray w/clumps into it, take it to the bathroom, and pour it into the toilet. Any clumps adhered to the sides wipe away cleanly with a bit of toilet paper. I think this is the best solution so far for me, and I've tried lots!

I'm very close to declaring A&H HP litter a "breakthrough product". It's head-and-shoulders above anything else I've tried to date.

The A&H HP litter is fantastic. Zero odor, easy clean-up, and flushable. Me and my cats never had it so good. My search for a solution is over.

I've noticed that this litter does not form the enormous #1 clumps that clay litters do. Smaller clumps mean less refilling. Despite its high cost, it's looking like the A&H HP might be fairly economical. It's so odor-free that I'm doubting (at this point) that I'll ever have to change out all the litter--just keep adding.

I can't say enough about how great I think this litter really is. I hope others will give it a try and post their feedback.

A couple more things I should add--this litter is very light (almost like tiny wood chips). A sifting box will need large opeings in the sifting pan to work well. The Van Ness box I mentioned can be found at Wal-Mart for about $11. It has a nice lip between the hood (it's not covered, but has an upper "rim" part to keep the litter in) which prevents litter from getting between the pan and hood.

Also, A&H states this litter is safe for both sewer and septic. I've flushed a couple pretty big loads that required a second flush, but there's never been any indication of wanting to clog. Other flushable litters I've tried made such weak clumps that they broke up and stunk horribly during scooping/sifting/flushing. The A&H HP litter doesn't have these problems.

Wrap-Up

Postby tbhausen » Sat Jul 08, 2006 7:09 pm

I'm going to wrap-up my observations here unless anyone has questions or comments. In summary, everything's still terrific with the A&H HP litter and Van Ness sifter. I haven't touched a scoop one time since I started this thread. There's still no odor and I haven't done anything except add litter. The litter doesn't seem to degrade like clay litter does--I still don't think a complete change-out will ever be required with this setup. It looks like my cost (2 cats) will average under $10/month (I've only purchased one more bag since starting this thread, and it's still over half full). It's really odd considering all the time and money I've spent on automated products that this combination has won the day hands-down. It's so effortless to maintain this set-up that I usually sift and flush at least twice daily.

I noticed a 15lb bag of this litter at Target. The price was only a little under $12.

I'm currently using Fresh Steps crystal litter in the Littermaid, but I'm curious what this A&H litter is like. I may give it a try.

Alright, I bought a 10lb. bag of this stuff at Walmart for about $9. This morning, I put some of the litter in the Littermaid. We'll see how that works out. I like that the litter is "clean", meaning it is not dusty at all.

Hmmm, I bought 7# bag at Marsh (local grocer), and now we have 15# bag reported at Target and 10# bag at Wal-Mart. Seems Target is cheapest by a hair, though...

I've been interested to learn others' impressions of this product. I still just love it (so much, I've decided to forego the Cat Genie for now, unless user reports sway me otherwise).

I just stumbled across this thread--BTW, I'm glad to know there're others as obsessed as I am with all of this stuff.

I happened across the A&H High Performance Litter the other day at a PetSmart, only 1 bag, and after I got done laughing at the High Performance part of the name, I wondered if it was really better. I looked for more info on the website; it really didn't say much. I went back to buy it anyway but there was no evidence of it that it was ever on the store's shelf! Did I dream it up? I asked myself.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I'll have to try it.

I've been using this litter for about a week now in the Littermaid. I like it. The clumps are not messy like other litter. They seem to form very quickly and the litter just doesn't seem as messy as other litter. I think I'll be sticking with this one. Sometimes the clumps will get stuck in the rake, but not often and they knock right off. They don't stick and smear like other litter.
